    I built my stand top, base and legs out of 2x6's and dadoed all the joints. Glued and screwed I think it is a super strong design as the joints all overlap and distribute the load on the dado cuts not the screws or metal braces.

    Be very careful with this calculator. If you are going to double up 2 x 4's to make
    your 4 x 4's you will end up being short by a half inch each on these dimensions.
    Can't quite remember with 4 x 4's but, a 2 x 4 will measure at around 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.

    Guys,
    2 x 4 or 4 x 4. But I did not see to many comments on the type of wood being used. In my opinion, I would go with a wood that is more resilient to water than others. We plan on keeping our tanks for many years and you would hate to see the wood starting to ROT over time. Just like the metal stands begin to catch rust and need a few coats of rustolium regularly.
    Would cedar or teak be a good choice ?
