I've currently been working on setting up a 90 gallon tank (48"x18"x24"). Plans are eventually for it to be a reef, but I'm purposely going slow as this is my first saltwater tank.

My basic setup right now is a Remora Pro skimmer with a Mag3, a Eheim 2026 Prof II Canister that I am planning to take all the media out and just run Chemipure, a DSB, about 50lbs of LR, a Yellow Tang, two yellow-tailed damsels, a cleaner shrimp, 5 turbo snails, and 2 fighting conch. My lighting is current just two NO 48" bulbs.

I am planning my lighting upgrade right now. I have decided to go with 2 x 250w 10000k Metal Halides combined with 2 x 110W VHO Super Actinics. I am looking at getting PFO lighting. I will either go with their hood which is ready to go and just needs to be placed on top of the tank (its 12" wide so I would still have room for feeding etc.) or go with their retrofit kit and build a canopy.

Here is the problem. I'm living in an apartment and it isn't possible for me to build a canopy in it. I also would want the canopy to look good as the tank is in our living room and is a bit of a show piece (or hopefully will be one day...). I was thinking of drawing up some rough plans and taking them to a cabinet maker in London and see what we could come up with.

Does anyone know of someone in London who is good and could design and build a nice canopy? Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanx in advance.

The best thing to do would be figure out the type of wood you want, and all the dimensions. Then just go to the lumber store and buy the wood, you can have them cut every piece for you to your measurements, it doesn’t cost that much to have them cut it. Then buy some good quality wood glue and some stainless steel screws take it all home and you assemble it your self.

Good Luck!

I would like to stain the wood black to match the stand. Any special stain that I should use or would any regular wood stain be safe?

Thanx.

Buy the highest quality stain you can find. Ask the sales person about which stains are waterproof, or designed for outdoor use. You will also likely want to put a clear coat over the stain for even more water proofing. Use a high quality clear coat like the stuff used on hardwood floors, as it is designed for high contact and harsh use.
