Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I would like to present to you this weeks profile! This week is the......

Copper Banded Butterflyfish!!!!!!

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the profile all ye CB B/F fans!!!

Copper Banded Butterflyfish

Size: 20 cm
Latin Name: Chelmon rostatrus
SG:1.023
pH: 8.0-8.2
Color: White, yellow and copper
Commonly Bred: no

Food
Difficult to feed, may eat clams stuck in a shell.
May eat corals and anenomes, keep an eye out for trouble.

Interesting facts
The CB B/F is often kept in tanks to keep the pop of apitsasia down. Trust me. it doesn't work.
The copper banded's long snout is to extract food from the reef, therefore, I don't call it reef safe.

NOTE
The CB B/F is exremily difficult to keep alive. It is picky food wise, needs perfect water conditions, and cannot be exposed to air. I recommend at least ten years experience with SW before trying this fish.

Black Molly,
I have seen CB B/F's kept successfully in softie style reefs, namely Mark Yurek's 600 gallon to keep aptaisia in check. Mark had him for several years before he tore down his tank in the Spring. I think in a lot of ways dealing with these particular B/F's is like purchasing a Centropyge sp. they all have their own personalities, and you can't tell which one is gonna go Jeffery Dahlmer or John Wayne Gacy on your LPS's
FWIW

P.S. I'm not trying to start an argument, so please don't shoot me or hit me over the head with a folding chair or fire me outta a cannon. You may however tie me up and tickle me, but this isn't the right forum for that kind of discussion. :D

As Dman has said I have seen several coper bands eat aptaisia.. they do a heck of a job and when it is gone they look for something else.. also all the ones I have seen, eat anything given to them..

I think the profiles are a cool idea but I also thing they should be based on fact not opinion.. and maby that is why people are not comming to see them as much as you would like..

Thats a great point StirCrazy. I have one question though...what is suppost to be a "fact" besides the average size and their natural habitat?? I mean, the rest is peoples (thought about) opinion. If you go to many of the species profiles sites out there you will see all of them are "somewhat" different. No ONE profile is the same. Now, this could be a bad thing, but I think it could also go to show people have success with Many fish, in MANY ways. Just a thought.

Agreed. Captive husbandry articles are very much based on authors' personal experience, and no two situations are identical. At best, the articles should be researched carefully and draw upon common elements of several respected, up-to-date sources, but no article can cover all idiosyncrasies of captive-care of a species.

Thank Ya! Yeah. I mean...I could see if you had to right up a paper for college or something that HAD to be backed up by scientific Info., but when it comes to species profiles on a forum, I think people are WANTING more of an opinion then a bunch of "Mumbo-Jumbo" about what is fact or fiction.

I am not picking on you StirCrazy...just my thoughts. Thats all! ;)

no problem but I guess what I am getting at is that people will see this on a board sponcered forum and "ASSUME" that it is gospel, not opinion and will go off with that in there head and could make some mistakes later on down the road (not from this one but I think you know what I mean) **** (Please don't swaer on the board, thanks, BM) 1/2 the urban myths in this hoby were started from opinion with out fact..

I know my self I have been sorting through "opinion" for the last 25ish years and 90% of it has turned out to hold no value..

I know that if some one does something and it is sucessfull then they believe that way to be true but they could also be the exception (something like my emerald crab that won't eat bubble algae :( ) just because something does good/bad in my tank doesent mean I will say you have to do this.. with my traitor emerald crab I will still say that Most emeral crabs will take care of bubble algae..

which goes back to my statement that if there is no hard "FACT" and I don't nessaraly mean a research project, but rather well respected publeshed authors that are recient, or at the verry least "Popular opinion" would be good.. this way we don't have a newbe going to RC and telling some one that "they are full of %%%% and there copper band will never eat aptasia and they are dooming it to die because he has only been keeping salt water fish for 5 years" and then saying this is what he was told on Aquariumspro..

see my point?

;) Okay, first of all, I have very little personal work with these fish, I had a friend who bought a couple to get rid of the apitasia, and they were dead within a week, and she had no less apitasia.
So when I did resaerch on this fish in several books and all over the web, I found very few who support the use of them as apitasia control and no one who thoght they were at all hardy. So please can we remeber that most of that thing is part opinion?
Thank you,
Carrie

BTW...Black Molly was swearing??? I didn't see that. Please PM me and further explain that one to me....because as we know, this board is for molly to HELP people by giving out (might I say) VERY helpful info, not to be critisized about everything she may or may not post.

hmm.. GoldFishGuy2002, you need to read stuff again.. no one said she was swearing.. and no one is criticizing everything she said. just the accuracy of a couple things in her profile..

so I can see this is going to go nowhare and no one is going to understand and try to benifit from this so I will refrain from posting again..

I have been busting my (somthing) trying to help this board by many DIY posts and other posts but I see that this species of the weel is ment to be "to look at only" no descussion allowed so thats it..

bye

It wasn't me that swore, it was stir crazy, and a note from me explaining why I edited it. I'm a mod now ya know.;)
Stir, disscusion is fine, but that was getting heated.
I never want to see swearing on my/mitch's forum.
Thank you and have a nice day!

Whoa, everybody put the guns down and back away from the table real slow. Alright, I was under the impression that the whole idea for a species of the week forum is to let everyone chime in on personal experiences after the basics had been established (size, colouring, natural habitat, scientific names, etc)
Anyone who has been in the hobby for awhile usually knows when someone else is "shootin' the breeze" or touching up their stories like Kenneth Lay and the books at Enron and someone will call them on it almost every time. (This also gives newbies the chance to sort out the flakes from the moderately well informed)

One thing I've noticed about marine fish is that they all have their own personalities (go figure with a brain that small) and everyone's experience with the same fish is just a little bit different, and therein lies the truth of almost all marine infauna, digest the good and the bad and then take the middle, it's the one usually closest to what is right.

So don't kid yourself about who is right and who is wrong, the important thing is that there is rapport to start with.

Jumpin, was that just a sermon, sorry, y'all can pick up your guns again

Actually it does, if you get one that has a liking to them. I know of lot's of people that have had success.

Like any other fish in saltwater, you take your chances. Lot's of "reef safe " fish have been a PITA in many a tanks.
Thats whay there should be no phrase as " reef safe"

I recommend at least ten years experience with SW before trying this fish.

Once again....disagree

Whoa!! This is getting a little out of hand - so this is where I step up to the soapbox and put on my "Administrator's Hat".:king:

Steve...I agree with your points completely. Black Molly/GFG...you guys have to calm down and rethink your approach to people while here.

Just to clarify a few things. GFG and Black Molly are not Moderators within the forums. They are both Information Contributors (specifically for the FW and SW Species of the Week threads).

Carrie -
What I will suggest is that you submit your SW Species of the Week thread to Mitch/coralmorphian to review. Once you have HIS go-ahead...then post it up here for public viewing.

I too spent way too much time trying to determine fact from fiction when I got into this hobby. "These 3 books say do it this way, and these 3 books say do it another way...and this guy I know does it completely different from either book...and I an just more confused now then when I started."
Does this sound familiar?

Basically my point is that there are going to be a thousand different ways to do everything...there is no "one right way". We need to keep this in mind especially when posting "assistance" threads, as it is very easy for someone to read one person's 'opinion' and take it for granted as being the "holy".

Also...
Carrie...I am not sure what transpired in this thread before now...but unless a member is trashing someone else or being extremely profane...EDITING or DELETING another members post is not permitted. This is a forum where people are encouraged to share their opinions...and I do not want people to feel threatened or belittled by posting. I have software installed to prevent rude words from being posted (it will replace swear words with ***)...so should you see a post that is in question...either bring it to my or coralmorphian's attention via the Mod forum or PM/e-mail. Basically...do not edit or delete another persons post without Administrator's approval - period.

I hope that everyone can understand my points here...

My apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced or insulted.

If anyone would like to continue this side of this discussion...please take it to PM - as it does not belong in this thread!

.........I'm back to bein Little Ole Me again..."Admin Hat has been removed":jester:

For more information on Moderators/Admins/Super Moderators/Contributors and their positions...please see the following thread (http://www.aquariumpros.ca/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1006).

Actually...

The whole point behind these forums is not for critisim of a person or post...but a multitude of people contributing to the greater good - SOLID INFORMATION.

When you post to the site...unless you post a definite fact like "My dog's name is Bob" or "Yellow Tang's are a salt water fish"...you are posting your 'OPINION' that is open to discussion.

If you feel that just because someone contributes to what you have said (be it positive or negative)...they are critisizing you...then you're being a little over sensitive, and need to relax a bit.

Remember - we are part of an On-Line Discussion Group. We all discuss things here. There is no preaching, and even Moderators and Admins (except for me :P) can be wrong sometimes. Again...striving for the greater good...proper SOLID information.

Honestly...I learn things from the forums nearly every day. I consider myself an Advanced Hobbiest...but I don't claim to know everything. We are all here to learn and help...let's try not to forget that.

Cheers,

GoldFishGuy2002

I hear ya, AJ!

Butttt ME...over sensitive? HA! That's Funny! :clown:

It was they way people were wording thier posts that made me want to chime in saying "hey this is an opinion based board, it's not going to be all facts"

It looked like BM was being bullied and I consider her my friend and maybe I should have used PM but hey, I didn't.

I am not in the middle of this disagreement. I only posted here 1 or 2 times in this thread...none of which was to be taken offensively...and with all the flaming that was going on, I do not wish to partake in it, what-so-ever.

If from now on, someone has a problem with me, please see ME about the issue. If it can (at all) be resolved, resolve it with the person YOU have the issue with...because as we know, AJ is rather busy these days and it's just not fair to drag him into your personal feelings with me, or anyone else for that matter.

Thank You.
