View Full Version : Maxima not opening fully

About a week ago I noticed my 4" blue maxima was not opening fully. I have a 1.5" gold maxima and a 4" deressa that look and act normal. All my corals look fine, SPS, LPS, softs.
What I have noticed is that my hippo tang constantly goes over to the clam and " looks" right at it and swims away. This causes the clam to close up. But it never re-opens fully.
Before my metal halides turn on the clam is opened more (at this time the tang really isn't swiming around).

If it is the tang is bugging it (I've never seem him nip at the clam) what can I do, besides getting rid of him (which I'm considering, but will probably not be able to catch). The deressa does close violantly when the tang swims by on occasion.

If it's just a coincidence that the tang is around there a lot, what in particular could I look for that is causing it to open less. I've never seen any parasitic snails on it, could I be missing them?

As a last resort you could try moving him to another spot in the tank?

I'm working on moving it.
Yesterday it decided to jump of it's ledge (impressive since it's a fairly heavy clam) and seemed to be happier on the substrate, however I will try to make room for it on another ledge.

Try covering the clam with a "crate" made out of fluorescent light diffuser. This will allow a fair amount of light and current to reach the clam, but not allow your tang or other offending fish to nip it. If after several days the clam begins to extend its mantle normally again, then it is fairly safe to assume that one of your fish was sampling the mantle. This trick worked for me when a clown tang started nipping the mantle of a large maxima clam. Sometimes it is very hard to see if a fish is bothering a clam because you can't watch the tank 24 hours a day and my fish tend to stop what they are doing and follow me around when they see me outside of the tank - hoping for food. Good luck and act quickly as we all know clams can go downhill very quickly.
