Just scooped up a Steatogenys elegans, 'marble knife fish', rather uncommon these days, and very pretty...and got him at a reasonable price, too....I just hope that he settles in well.

Wow - that's a neat looking fish! I've seen knifefish before, but never one quite as unique looking as this one. Although, acutally, all knifefish are rather unique looking. Hmmm, I'm babbling - I'll just shut up now. :D

Beautiful fish Toirtis - hope he does well for you! :D

Wow I wonder if he/she is nicer looking in person! Never seen that kind before!

p.s....how do you get those large pics up? I am told my is too big!

It not that big....in fact, it is exactly the maximum allowble size (I trimmed it down right to te pixel). Smaller pics are better anyways, as they eat up less space/bandwidth.

And yes, it does look a bit better in person.;)

Darn...the knife died. Very strange thing...the tank he was in (65 gal) was well-seasoned, stable as anything...bombproof, even....then suddenly, in the space of <5 hours, a massive ammonia spike (over 7.5 ppm...off the scale)....tank cloudy, water yellowish, knife dead... for no apparent reason. Two 50% water changes over 4 hours, and as of 6 hours later (and still, 5 days later), the tank is crystal clear, no trace of ammonia, nitrite, nothing. While doing changes, I searched the tank....no pockets of leftover food, no dead fish, no filter-failure...nothing whatsoever to account for such a massive, sudden spike and such a sudden and complete recovery. I am baffled (and a bit paranoid)....I have never seen anything like it in 30 years of fishkeeping. Subsequent necropsyon the knife showed nothing out of the ordinary...just what one would expect to find in a fish that died of ammonia exposure (all the other fish in the tank are just fine).

Hmmm - that's really weird! Sorry to hear about it Toirtis. :(

Hope you never have to go through anything like that again! And it makes it even worse when you don't even know what happened!

Toirtis,

Wow, that is a bit odd for to happen just like that. Have you checked to see if someone accidentally dropped an sort metal in? I only ask because if happned at a lfs here and they lost ALL thier Koi's, a kid dropped in a coin in and it was resting on the fliter system which was covered by the plant and didnt see it(they never said which coin it was) just before closing(9pm) by 6am the next moring they were all dead!It happend 2x, she lost over $200 per patch!

Anyhow I am sorry to hear about your lost, seeing as he was(to me) rare to see and you were so proud of the little guy....

Nope, no foreign objects, metal or otherwise, besides, a coin wouldn't cause an ammonia spike....still, no clues. I had a friend whose marine aquarium was nearly comletely killed-off by a half dozen metallic crayons, though (gotta love kids).
