Hi everyone

Hope everyone is having a great summer.

I recently bought a yellow Tang for my 125 and I have been trying to feed him seaweed delight with no luck.

I used a clip to attach and yes it fell off the glass go figure, I decided to leave it and still the tang didn’t seem interested so I waited when I went back to the tank a couple of hrs latter, I noticed it was half under a rock.

Hmmm, upon looking at it closer I noticed one of my bristle worms had grabbed it so I left it besides him and my clown they are the only ones interested.

I have looked around town (Asian markets) for Nori and no luck, am I looking in the wrong places?

What else could I try?

Thanks for any help.

Your Tank may not initially go for the seaweed, however, evenyually it will. To speed the process up a little, try thawing some mysis shrimp and spreading the shrimp amongst the seaweed. This will definatelt attrack the Tang's notice and once it starts eating the seaweed you can stop adding Mysis and it will continue to eat the seaweed without the shrimp. This technique has worked very well for me in encouraging herbivores to recognise nori and the like as food. Good luck.

Your tang may not be secure enough in his new home yet, I have two yellow tangs in my 125 that nobody else has seen yet:laugh:
As soon as anyone other than myself goes near the tank, the two tangs vanish.
I am sure over time as your new member to the tank feels more at home he will be more than happy to feed on your added vegitation:dance:
Oh, if your clip does not stick to the glass use a razor blade and clean an area of glass real good....it should stick then

As far as the nori goes - I kept looking for it at my local grocery store (A & P), and could never find it. So, I figured they just didn't carry it.

One day, I just accidently stumbled across it! It was right in front of the deli area, where they had a little display of sushi and sushi-related stuff (including nori)! Except it was called roast seaweed or something like that. It comes in a package of 10 sheets. So, maybe your grocery store *does* carry it? Ask at the deli if they sell sushi.

Good luck. :D

Thanks for the replies everyone I will keep an eye out for it, figures I go looking for it under the name Nori and the people at the markets don't know what the heck I am talking about.

"Your Tank may not initially go for the seaweed"

Ya I asked them at the LFS what they had been feeding them they said flake but the thought of a bunch of un eaten flake floatting around made me think twice.

A lot of good suggestions

I will give it a go.

The health food store in my town carries red, brown, and green Nori - it is just dried, not roasted, nothing added - my tangs eat it like crazy. My yellow tang did not show any interest in it at first, not until I added a tang which was used to eating Nori - then the yellow one caught on and started eating it, too.

Big Al's carries sheets of green algae, and some mail order companies carry Seaweed Selects, which ar a bit expensive, but which come in brown, as well as red and green.

If you haven't already located a Nori supply, I go to two stores in the north east corner of London. One is in a strip mall and gas station at the corner of Huron and Clarke Rd. and the other is just west of Clarke Rd. on Huron in another strip mall. Both carry the same brand, and occasionally one or the other is out of stock. Stock on the shelves can be mixed and you may have to dig through other seaweads to get it.
The packages I buy are labled "YAKI-SUSHI NORI" and have pictures of nori wrapped seafoods on it, with the upper right corner coloured with orange and gold coloured design.
The cheaper store is the one just west of Clarke Rd. on Huron St.

Dried maybe better, wonder what they add to roasted hmmm.

Ray

I found some roasted at A&P and rottn I checked the deli and they had it over by the seafood instead, funny thing was I was looking for fresh as in green not dried or roasted that’s why I was having trouble finding it.

Interesting that health food stores carry dried rather than roasted and you would think it would be cheaper than roasted (one less thing they have to do in processing it)

I want to vary the diet what else do tangs eat?

The main food I feed all mine is spirulina flake that I buy in 1 lb bags.

What I did when I got my yellow, was soak the nori in a garlic mix for 12 hours and then feed it to them, not only does that help to prevent ick(common when adding a tang), The garlic scent seems to attract them. When getting nori just make sure you get plain roasted nori with no additives as they can foul up your tank. I got a huge package about 300 sheets at a korean store in mississauga on dundas. I freeze the bag(comes in ziplock) and every week I take out 2 sheets andplit them up for feeding and store them in a tu[pperware with two compartments(one small for garlic soak and one large for the rest of the nori). It works out great. My tang picked at LR for about a day and then it took nori no problems. It also loves the flakes that are for the maroon and chromis. The naso doesn't seem interested in the flakes though

I feed my yellow tang spinach and romaine lettuce.

I tried romaine lettuce and my Tang "turned his nose up at it". Picked up some Julain Spring's Seaweed Veggies at Big Al's. It took about an hour for Sunshine (my tang) to get up the nerve to take a bite...was hilarious watching him try to "deke" the clip out! Once he had a nibble, he was hooked! He'll go thru a sheet 3"X3" every day!

There is a pic of him "chowing down" at http://www.aquariumpros.ca/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2997&perpage=15&pagenumber=4

My Yellow and Kole tang eat:
Roasted Seaweed from Sobeys (by the Sushi Section)
Mysis Shrimp
Spirulina (Every so often I toss some in the tank)
NutraMIN Flake food.

A good flake will keep pretty much everything happy.

I wish I had more algae for my Kole to munch on.. I see him grazing on the rocks and the glass but I doubt he's getting anything...
