As the header says, my water storage containers are leaking AGAIN! I'm currently using Roughneck plastic garbage cans (32 gal) for water storage but they seem to develop slow leaks after a short while of useage.

What is everyone else using? Surely there must be something out there that won't leak or leach harmful chemicals into the water. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I use the Rubbermaid Brute garbage cans. They're more expensive but are "food grade" and much sturdier. They dont' bow out of shape when full and there are dollys made for them as well, which I have used without any problems. The Roughneck line is also made of recycled material which might leech things like phosphate into the water.

Here's a good link for more info: http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19686&highlight=food+safe+rubbermaid+containers

These products are readily available at most Home Depots.

Archie, thanks for the help and quick response. I'm heading out first thing in the morning to pick up 2 Rubbermaid "BRUTE" 2632 trash cans. They're also available at Office Depot.

One of my lfs's carries food grade drums. I think they're about 50 or 60g, and are very sturdy. We bought 2 off him.

Mary, which store did you find the food grade drums? How much did you pay?

I'd be interested to know how much you paid as well.

Update: I picked up 2 of the above mentioned containers at Home Depot for $39.99 each (lid included, 32 gal). Thanks for all the help.

Aquarium Depot sold them to me. The first one I was charged $30.00 (back in March/April "ish), and we've waited for more since then. He finally got a shipment in last month, and we went in to pick it up, but got charged $50 this time. :(

Oh well - at least I've got my water storage system completed now. :)

Yeah, well, I wasn't expecting it. Hubby was the one who paid, so I didn't notice at the time how much the price had jumped, till we got home (or I would've said something). At this point, we don't really care too much. We were given a great deal by AD on LR, so I can't complain too much. :D

If you are looking for a nice water storage container...also check out Canadian Tire. They have some great 55Gal WHITE food-grade plastic containers there for a decent price (I can't remember the exact price...but it was around $30ish with latching covers). I have two of these containers in use for my tank.

One is used to house the RO/DI water
the other is where I house my mixed Salt Water.

If you want to see a photo of the containers...just let me know and I will post one.

Just thought I would post a pic of the Rubbermaid "BRUTE" 2632 trash cans that I'm currently using for water storage. No worries of water leaks anymore and the sides are sturdy enough to be plumbed. I currently have my tank and kalkwasser reactor top-offs plumbed into the fresh water container and a spigot for water changes on the saltwater container.
