Hey everyone,

I am hoping to get a CDN perspective on how to DIY a corner overflow. I totally understand the principle, and could easily build one. That being said, I would like it to be a little bit more than merely functional. I want to find out how to construct a nice simple, but professional looking corner overflow using acrylic, or something else if anyone has anything to recommend. THus far, my main concerns are notching the top, (which could easily be done with eggcrate), and bending the acrylic to get a nice 90 degree angled piece to fit the corner nicely. Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone maybe know a canadian who sells them online? Any help? I have looked all over the net, thekrib, ozreef, reefcentral, #reefs, etc etc.. just looking for some close to home input,

Thank in Advance.

I've built a couple now, and they are fairly easy to make. I prefer to cut 2 pieces and then bond them together to make a corner. I've found for myself that it's quite a bit more difficult to bend acrylic and keep it staight to get a good corner, especially thicker pieces like 3/8" or more.
For the "teeth" I use a router with a 3/8" straight cut bit and free hand cut them.

Now having said that, I'll never make an over-flow out of acrylic again! I recently had one fail during a power outage and dumped 20g of water on the living room carpet.
The problem with acrylic is that it doesn't bond to glass very well and that will obviously lead to problems.

My other tank built by Inter-American uses a glass over-flow with eggcrate on top and is extremely strong. To me, I think this is the way to go, and I'll be replacing the other tanks over-flow with glass very shortly.

I would also add a Durso/Stockman mod as well, it really works well to get rid of the Niagra Falls sound with out having to fiddle with valves all the time.

Not exactly a corner overflow, but does exactly the same thing and you don't lose all that space all the way down to the bottom.

Thanks for the info guys!
Just one question Kenzy, for a glass overflow, are you using clear glass or can you get something in a certain colour? I would imagine clear glass would be rather ugly as you would see all the plumbing behind it, especially if you used a Durso type baffling system. Is tinted glass safe for aquarium usage, or can glass be made to order in special colour, if it could then that would probably be my route as well, as the a glass on glass is much more familiar to me then acrylic on glass.

csnow,
You can get glass in all kinds of colours, usually a little bit pricier but not by much
