View Full Version : Secrets to growing clams

From what I've read, the important things one would need to have a healthy and growing clam are: MH lighting, DT Phytoplankton for food, good calium levels (400+), and superb water quality (zeros on everything).
What type of equipment setup do you have with your clams. What type of clams do you have and how long have you had it. Any misfortunate stories you can share?
I seem to be drawn to the Maxima clams and I'm hoping to add one to my 46 gal once my MH lighting is up. Hoping to have a variety of LPS, SPS, and clams all in one tank ........ good idea?

You are partially correct in what a clam needs to grow, but you do not have to have zeros on everything. Clams need nitrate to grow as well. I have to dose my clam system everyother day with sodium nitrate. Most clams starve to death. When I get my clam shipment in I raise the nitrate level to 25 parts in 2 days the 100 or so clams drop that level down to less than 5 parts! One other key thing is to buy an aquacultered clam they do much better! Good luck with you future clam!

Hi Jayson,
Where did you purchase your sodium Nitrate? I need some for myself. I have about 30 Clams (various sizes from 1"-6") in my 150 gallon tank. I have never seen my nitrate go over 5ppm. I have a lot of fishes(30) and I overfeed my tank to make sure I have enough supply of nitrate or ammonia. Forgot to mention that I dose my tank with phytoplankton twice a day.

I purchase my sodium nitrate from my supplier. I get an ultra pure grade so it is very expensive. But so are 100 or so clams. Clams are very sensitive to metals so it is very important to get the best grade possible.

Thanks Jayson,
Would you have any other recommendation on how to get my nitrate to a good level. I would say around 10-15 ppm constantly. I was thinking of putting some bioballs in my sump.
Do you sell any Sodium Nitrate?

I do sell the sodium nitrate. You may want to contact me privately for this info as AJ will get mad if I post it here. He has already removed my sig tag because it had my web page link in it. Thanks
