Is it normal for a squamosa or anyother clam for that matter to close almost all the way for periods of time even with the lights being on ? I moved my clam from the rocks to the sand . well he didn't like that i guess cause he closed almost all the way for 2 days then i put it back up on the rocks where it was. And was open today. Now coincidence or is thier closing for periods normal . Nothing i could see was poking at the mantle looks ok. So i don't know if maybe the light change etc . Questions questions lol . Thx for the info :D Dave

I haven't really heard of that before... unless the clam was dying, but your obviously isn't lol...

My squamosa even stayed open while it was being picked at by a fish in my tank... so I guess he just hated the substrate!

Hey flored!

Mine will close all the way every now and then. sometimes when a fish swims over it, sometimes for no reason at all. How long is it closeing for? Mine does it for only 20-30 seconds and then the mantle expands to normal. But it sounds like you mean for extended periods of time

My squamosa is on the sand and it has been there for 1 1/2 year already and its growing well..

Flored, when you moved it from the rock to the sand, did you notice if the clam was already attched to it? If so, you might have damaged the foot, if not, then it should be ok. Monitor it closely for the next few days and try not to aggravate it too much. Hope this helps...

You may have damaged the byssal gland but he may recover. I'd be more worried if the clam started to gape.
