This 10gal nano has been up and running for about 3 months now. Picture quality sucks but here's where I'm at so far.

hey looks good.

is that some kind of goby? I really want one for my nano, but they are recommended for a 50g minimum. how is yours holding up. what do you feed it? what are it's habits like.

let me know as I'm very interested in getting a sand sifter. I know I have enough algae for it to sift to be happy for a while ;)

It is a Yellow Spotted Shrimp Goby and is not a sand sifter. The Pistol Shrimp shown continuously digs and constructs tunnels in the sand and reinforces them with bits of rock and shell. The Shrimp Goby and Pistol Shrimp live together in the tunnels although the Shrimp Goby spends alot of time in the open waiting for food to float by. The Pistol Shrimp eats mostly poop left behind in the tunnels by the Goby. I feed the two goby's mysis shrimp twice a day. The tank is on a small table right beside my couch so viewing is easy and very interesting.

I've had it about 5 weeks. They tend to open more during night than day but mine opens about 1/3 of the time during lights on. I turkey baste the rocks when it's open so it has a better chance to feed while filter feeding.

Did you buy the goby and shrimp as a pair?

Kevin, I did get them as a pair but the Pistol Shrimp didn't survive the transition so I added another Pistol Shrimp a week later. They became best buddies right off. Because Pistol Shrimp are almost blind he only comes out into the open if the Shrimp Goby is also in the open. The shrimp will keep one of it's antenna touching the goby and if the goby swims off the shrimp will quickly retreat to one of it's tunnels. Because of it's very poor eye sight the shrimp probably feels that if the goby takes off then it's probably not safe for him either. They are fun to watch.

Thanks Dave - I have seen this pair on a nature show and was fascinated by them....Will definitely try to get a similar pair when my 112g is set up.

Where did you buy them?

Kevin, I got them here in Sudbury but I believe they are not that difficult to find, especially in your area.
