I have had several questions regarding scrubbers, since posting on the other thread. I decided to make a new post for info as messaging has a limit & I talk to much.

First there some pics of the scrubber in action on my page, which I keep forgetting to include in my signature.

A scrubber is different from an algae filter, as it uses a bucket type dump system or like mine a surge. Mine has a large tray, that sits on a pivot point. It comtains a mesh type screen for algae growth. As it fills with water, the balance shifts & the tray dumps into the tank. Empty it then tips back to its original position.

The sway of the surge over the algae & exposure to air, is what gives it a better growth & nutrients uptake capability. It grows a course brissly turf algae. Every couple weeks I take the screen out & scrape it clean, there-by removing all the nutrients it has absorbed. There are a pair of 55 watt compacts over the tray, run on reverse daylight.

There is a lot of threads on Reef Central concerning the scrubbers & even on the court battles. Eric Boremans forum has the best one. About a seven pager. Just search his forum under ATS.

Mine is sitting in a glass tray, because it came smashed into pieces. Actually we are still fighting for the inurance claim, since October.:(

Ther are several aquarists I know who have built there own designs, with dump systems or even Boreman type surge feeds. Inland Aquatics runs large ones on most of their tanks.

This is just a simple explanation, and it goes into much more detail on the threads mentioned if anyone is interested, including some home built models. Just be aware of the patents and dont build them to sell.
