i'm starting a new 65 gal tank, need advice on the following....
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/slylie-plan.JPG
the overflow goes to the sump, where the water passess through the first fuge (macroalge/dsb), the baffles, and the skimmer, then part of the water is retuned to the second fuge, which main puropse is culturing pods for tank food, while the rest is pumped back to the main tank.
first off, Which pumps should i use for this application?
where should i position the intake and return for the closed loop?
should i have the pumps outside or inside the pump?
any other advice is appreciated.
thanks,
sly

The only thing I would do different is to alter the sump arrangement. If you start at one end it would contain the overflow & skimmer then baffles to a refugium then baffles to a return to tank. this way you create a water flow through the system with no dead spots & running your skimmer prior to the refugium removes the air bubbles.

dont use a mag pump for a close loop as many tend to leak from the seal.

One of those Reeflo's from AJ would be pretty good for a closed loop.

Agreed!!
Great flow + energy savings each month. I just calculated it out...and I will be saving $600/year in electrical consumption by switching to the new ReeFlo Hammerhead!!
This is in addition to the savings I already see monthly since I switched to electronic ballasts!
It will pay for itself in less then a year just in the savings!! Too sweet!!

Don't put a DSB into your refugium. I'm not sure what the surface area of it is, but a lot of the critters needed for a DSB to work properly won't go within 2 or 3 cm of a solid surface. Without a lot of these critters, it'll just become a nutrient trap. Some LR rubble for pod production would probably be a better choice.
Just IMO, mind you.
Do a search for "edge effect" at RC.

ajx22 how quiet are those Reeflow pumps, for myself will not be in an enclosed area but it will be in my living room running a closed loop. I do value my life as my Wife would kill me if it was noisy.

From what I know - they are supposed to be VERY quiet. I have all three units arriving on the first shipment into Canada the first of next week - and once I connect mine (the Hammerhead - the largest of the line), I will provide more info.
Reeferboy on these forums is the Canadian Distributor - so maybe he can interject here with some of his own information too.
Also...Mugster & concept.ca will both be running these pumps too - and they to will be able to provide you with even more unbiased reviews of them too.

Another quiet pump that won't get you killed is the GenX. I have one, and it is very quiet.
-I have a refugium in my sump, and have a dsb there. I find the pods seem to like it. I also have 2 hermit crabs there. I haven't found any bad side effects, and the pod population is booming.
( I may be wrong ,not going to go into a dsb discussion here.)

I have to say the CSL Velocity series pumps are dead silent. My SCWD is louder than it. It does put a lot of heat into your tank though, so make sure you have some sort of ventilation.

only problem with the csl pumps is they are not threaded at the input output, youd have to clamp the hose onto the pump,

The reeflo pumps are very quiet 5.2 db compared to an ampmaster at 8.0. How high is the head between your sump and main tank? If it is only a few feet you could easily get away with a Dart. Low watts and high flow. You could even have a mainfold made so you could target some flow to your refug. The power to drive the dart would be less than all the mags you have spec'd.
Hope that helps.

I think the only CSL that is not threaded is the T4. I know the T3 is since that is what I am using.
Isn't a sequence pump a little much for his system?
