What type of lighting do you use to simulate moonlight? I seem to recall reading somewhere someone used a regular incandescent blue party light? I was also wondering if a NO "blacklight" (the kind used for blacklight posters from the 70's and in strip bars, not that I frequent them. ;) ..lol) could be used?

I have found that red light seems to be the best. All the critters come out and play and are not bothered by the red light. They apparently can't see that spectrum so to them it is night and they have no hesitation coming out.

You can use red bulbs or red rope lights.

As for the "blacklights" I would not recommend them as the UV light will harm your corals.

Blue bulbs will work fine also but I don't know how it will effect your night time activity.

Set the night light up so it comes on about 1/2 an hour before your main lights shut off.

Hope this helps

I use Red rope light for my 125 gal tank.. it works great like Reefin says... the fish and critters are not affeted by this light... The only think in my tank that sees it is my yellow tang..smart bugger huh...lol...
as for your other question i can't coment on it but i personally use VHOs antinics.
I bought my rope light at the hardware store at christmas time for about $8 and some hooks to hang them... easy and cheap and it looks awsome.. I only use mine on weekends when i like to watch ot or people are over for hmmmmm...beers..lol. I turn the lights on before the other lights go out though.
good luck

I use a small regular night light (without the cover) this light is mounted inside my light hood. It is on a timer and works really well, there is just enough light for me to see what really goes on at night!! :D
