Well it looks like I will be able to evaluate the newly developed "Wave2K (http://www.wave2k.com)" wave maker!! I have been waiting for the product to launch - and I just got off the phone with one of the owners/developers, and I should be receiving my demo unit very soon!! I will post information on its performance upon it's installation in my tank!
Check out the link above for more info!! Looks like this could be the solution for water movement in reef tanks!!!
Read the following info, and let me know who's interested in placing orders for this soon to be released item!!
Some info from the site:
The Wave 2K was developed to give the marine hobbyist, for the first time, total water movement. The circulation created from our machine, as in the ocean, cycles between forward water motion (wave in) and the action of that wave going back out. The Wave 2K forces water out of the top of the machine while pulling a similar volume in the bottom, then it reverses that cycle and forces out of the bottom, while pulling water in the top. This reversing action produces the same chaotic movement as you would see snorkeling in the ocean. Imagine pushing out and pulling in 8.8 gallons during each up and down cycle. Now imagine this taking place every 6 seconds, or ten times a minute, or 600 times per hour! Now imagine actually having a small wave across the top surface of your tank, and the joy of watching those flowing type corals actually moving back and forth just as they do in the wild!
At JOMI Aquatic Products, we have accomplished this, by utilizing an entirely new type of vessel that pushes out the same volume of water as it is taking in at the opposite end; top or bottom. We power this device with a heavy duty AC motor that is thermally protected for long continuous life. The mechanism itself has been designed with such simplicity, that long reliable service is our primary goal. (Patent#6,273,025)

I did some research on this unit about a year ago, and it seems promising. It has been in development for over 3 years now and I don't know if that is because of design problems, insufficient funding or perhaps they are just being extra cautious with the design and testing?
Major downside is that the expected price is $240US. Thats a big kick in the pants for a bloody wavemaker! (About $375CDN plus taxes!)
It looks like a significant contribution to the hobby, but sorry, too rich for my blood.

They are trying to ensure high quality in their production model. The one they have now is a little louder then they want (still very quiet), so they are changing the motor mechanism to quite it.
In regards to pricing - it will be about the same as a Sea Swirl - so by no means a CHEAP solution, but possibly a great new addition to our ever increasing demand for water movement in a NATURAL way.
I will know more after I receive it and get to test it! :D
I'll keep everyone informed!!

I'll be curious to see what you think of your demo unit AJ. Like I said, it sounds promising but it is very expensive.
As for comparing it price-wise to a Sea Swirl, well actually the Sea-Swirl is about $100CDN less, but I guess once you add in the cost of the pump to run on the Sea Swirl, it evens out.
But I do think that if it works as advertised, it's seems a much better current producing solution than using a Sea Swirl.
I assume you are getting the larger "Center Unit" as a demo?

Yes Andrew...they are sending me the Center Unit to try out. If it works out as well as I am hoping - and my tank still needs more water movement, then I will be adding a Corner Unit to the mix too.
In respect to the price comparison to Sea Swirls - I was referring to the SS + piping + pump - so this being a self contained unit requiring no plumbing is a BONUS in my books. Also, if the design proves to be as good as claimed - then the water motion would be MUCH more natural then PH's on a wavemaker or even a closed-loop with a motorized ball-valve. Any which way I can see - if performance is as claimed - then this should be the cheapest (though not cheap) and best (based on nature) solution available. Not to even mention that the cost of electricity to run this unit will be a LOT less then adding another high-flow pump as you would with a SS or closed-loop.
I will keep everyone informed in respect to my testing - it should be shipping out of Atlanta, Georgia either Friday or Monday.

Can't wait... :D

Well...this has been a process and a half...
All I have to say is that Jody and Mike from JOMI Aquatics not only seem to be 100% customer satisfaction driven, but are really great guys too.
As I have been posting; we have been waiting for an evaluation unit from them for a while now. They have not been happy with the production models coming off the line, and have delayed shipments due to this DEMAND for perfection. I spoke to Mike on last Friday and Jody today, and they have started to ship units as of the end of last week!!!
My evaluation unit should be departing Atlanta, Georgia this week - I will let you know when I have the tracking #.
I will post pics and a detailed report on it's installation and performance as soon as it lands.
On behalf on JOMI Aquatics and AquariumPros.ca - I apologize for the delays - but can assure you that I feel 100% certain that it will be worth the wait!
Best regards to all...

Here is a link to a customer that has the Wave2K installed and operating.
It is a thread from Reef Central - so more info will be available as time progresses.

Can't wait for ours to arrive! :D

If you look through the link listed above, you will see that sedgro (the thread starter) listed that he had a video of the Wave2K in action. You will also see that it is listed on his ftp site and it is getting too much traffic and locking people out.
I have downloaded the video to our server to make it available to those who would like to see it (NOTE - 7mb file).
Please keep in mind that I have only done this to assist you and by no way am trying to take credit for it.
Thank you to sedgro for providing this wonderful information.

Hey AJ, what's going on with this thing? You get it yet, and if so what are your initial impressions?
I'm leery with all the delays in this product over the past 2 years that it will never make it to market.

There have been a couple threads on the Wave2k on Reef Central in the last week from people who have received their units. So they are going out, albeit slowly :)
I would guess that within a month there will be alot more feedback on these units.
Cheers,
Tao.
