I have it in my display on the back wall. My urchin loves it. My opinion is algae in sump filters water and eats phosphate. All good to me but I defer to the experts. It's not a bad algae unless you have it all over your display which just means you have phos problem. Something I am still working on. But I LOVE the natural look of a tank.

my phosphates are 0. I am using RO/DI water along with GFO reactor...I have no algae in my display right now. it is only in my refugium, nothing in sump either

Well if you have Green hair algae then you have phosphates. You will read 0 because it will be hidden in the algae itself. Is the LR the algae is on the same as what is in your display or is it a different batch? The reason I am asking is that the phosphates may be coming from the LR itself and is feeding the green hair algae.
I would honestly suggest removing that piece of LR from the refugium because the last thing you want is a break out of green hair algae in your display. It takes a long time to get rid of it.
Replace the piece of LR with some nice chaeto or some other type of macro algae that is beneficial to the tank without any chance of causing outbreaks.

it is different set of rock. My display was mostly dry rock which was seeded with a nice piece of LR. I am going to take those rocks out this weekend from refugium. I added cheato some weeks back but a little of that is left and rest has died. i will add some more..thanks

It's hair algae. The same thing happened to me a while ago when I had a larger tank. What I did was take the rocks out and boil them, let them dry out and re cycle them in another tank. Note* Boiling the rock will smell REALLY bad.

hair algae can find its way to your display and therefore not desirable in Fuge.
cheato requires thumbling. probably the flow in fuge is too low to move cheato and that's why it died ?
remember, when algae dies, it releases all that it has taken up. the po4 and no3 and ... ..
good luck :)

I have taken out rock from my refug now and I will add hydor powerhead to keep flow going, how much flow do you suggest for my 75 g refugium? Just remember the water flowing through refugium is probably 100 gallon per hour as I understand we should give enough contact time for the cheato to work on nitrates. Also, my display always seem to have suspended particals, is it because of my diamond goby?
