View Full Version : cave width

In my new set up, I am designing some caves for mantis shrimp. I have some conflicting information and some vague information.
I was told that the cave should be 1.5 times the width of the mantis shrimp's girth for turning radius. Although this makes sense, I couldn't find what the girth of a peacock mantis shrimp's girth was at adult size.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks in advance.

My Peacock is about 5" long and 1" across the back. I have seen them about 10" though. I have a 2" diameter U-shaped piece of PVC that he uses as a burrow. He has no problem flipping over and going back in.http://i1013.photobucket.com/albums/af254/Gsto/0102.jpg

ahh thank you!
I was wondering about that. Currently I have samples from 1" PVC ~ 2" PVC. It is kind of like LEGO for adults :)
Beautiful specimen by the way :D

well Gsto,
It seems that I will be picking your brain a bit with this set up. Once it is up and running, a peacock mantis is definitely in the works, if it can be obtained. Given my time line, I would assume possibly 3 to 6 months from now.

You have to call every LFS and make a pest of yourself. It took me a few months to finally get one from John at NAFB. I had a tank set up for 3 months with just 3 Nassarious and 1 Astrea snail in it. I fed them every couple of days, and it was amazing how many Amphipods and Isopods multiplied and covered every surface! Since they have no predators in with them, I still have a ton. Good luck with your future purchase! Maybe we should start a mantis thread...

When I get a chance I'll take a shot of the tanks.
Basically it is 30 x 65 gals with a 30 gal sump. One of those (65 gals) is going to be for a mantis shrimp. I still have to plumb it and do the leak tests, but so far so good :)

oops... 2 x 65 gal tanks... not 30.. have no idea where that came from.
I got the ABS piping and started cutting it and also started plumbing the tank. 1 tank is almost finished :)

I know nothing about them though, but that doesn't stop me from admiring them for the beautiful creatures they are.....and they sure do pack a punch!!!!
I know SOHAL TANG has one, i've seen it too, but he had it seperated and it was a bit hard to see it.
Yours is very nice!
Are they social?

He comes out all the time and seems to stare at me, especially if he's hungry. Any snails are doomed, but he doesn't touch corals.
