What are the reg. prices on the strips?
Are LED's replaceable when they burn out?

Hehe. I was just putting that info in the post....it's in the initial post, but here they are again.
Retail Prices (before discounts) :
12" $142.00 less quantity discount (10%, 15%, 20%)
15" $142.00 less quantity discount (10%, 15%, 20%)
24" $205.00 less quantity discount (10%, 15%, 20%)
36" $231.00 less quantity discount (10%, 15%, 20%)
48" $252.00 less quantity discount (10%, 15%, 20%)
They ARE replaceable, however, they are under-driven 3 watt LED's that run at less than half power. This is also why they do not need fans to cool them. Chances are slim they will ever burn out. That being said, they are not terribly expensive to replace the whole strip.
These strips come in BLUE, WHITE and 50/50.

I was just on the website.....how come the 15" has 6 LEDs but only runs 9watt. Yet the website says they are 3 watt LEDs. Do you know what kind of LED they are and why they are underdriving them at 1.5watt?

At 20% off that is a respectable price!
You might want to add that a single strip is equivalent to 2 actinic's - at least I know the 48" ones are.

I agree, the price is very good. I was surprised at how inexpensive they were to begin with. Tom worked hard to get a good discount from the supplier.

Darry, I "think" I know what LED is used, but I need to find out for sure before i say. I am having trouble finding that info. I will post it once I get confirmation. Thanks

These are wonderful lights, and the blue ones add a lot of "pop" to the tank - much more so than any T5 bulbs.
They are 3W bulbs, underdriven at 1.5W for heat concerns (I contacted the company directly before I bought mine about a year ago). It would be nice if they were driven at the full 3W, but apparently the company said it could not be done safely with this design.
As it is, they were tested by one company for PAR, and it was found that they produce close to twice the PAR of an ATI blue plus bulb with a good reflector.
So I would highly recommend these strips to anyone in search of actinic supplementation for their tank (and I would go with the all blue one).

the led's are not replaceable when they burn out. you need to replace the fixture. good warranty on them though. there's no optics on them nor are they available to buy separately. they are also not dimmable.

OK< so the "official" response is they are NOT replaceable. However, they reputedly last a ridiculously long time, due to the fact that they are UNDER-driven LED's.
Considering how inexpensive they are, it doesn't seem unreasonable.

I have no knowledge about the led lights,
I got 90 gallon 48l by 18w by 24 tall tank, mostly soft corals, but someday I would like to try more sps, how many 48 strips will I have to buy?
Right now I have 8 t5ho 54 watts.

You are good to go with what you have - 8 bulb T5 can grow anything.
Matt do you have the par readings on these fixtures? If members are buying them for coral growth they will need to know the levels.

hey matt,
can u get those brackets that hold the strips together like a pendant fixture. i think they do make them.
maybe use two strips white and two strips blue.
would these be good for growth not only colour?
thanks

How many of these would be required to run a standard 75 gallon sps or a 65 gallon tall sps. Or are they meant to be more of a supplementary lighting system.
Any info you could provide on a par rating would be very helpful and appreciated.
Thank you

OK, I need to try and get a more "official" statement from Reefbrite about the PAR. However, my research has come up with a comparison that is fairly straight forward and comprehensive.
The following picture shows PAR reading at different levels and places in a tank. The comparison is of 4x ATI Bulbs (3 Blue Plus and 1 12k Special) vs 2 50/50 Reef Brite LED Strips.
The RED is T5's and the GREEN is LED.

Violet,
I recommend one Reef Brite strip per 18" width of tank (front to back) for a softie tank
I recommend one Reef Brite strip per 12" width of tank (front to back) for a LPS tank
I recommend one Reef Brite strip per 8" width of tank (front to back) for a SPS tank
With what you have, you could attach a strip on either side of your T5 to supplement and give that nice shimmer effect. You could get the all blue strips and it would make your colors POP!
Jo, if there are brackets available, I am sure Tom can order them. you would have to ask ORG.

Yes, I actually thought I included that in that post, but missed it., thanks. However, it depends on what you want on the sandbed, so to speak. I still wouldn't recommend putting them on a 30" dee[ tank and try to grow SPS on the bottom. :D

I am definitely going to grab two. I would eventually want to add an additional fixture (so 3 reef brite fixtures on my 75gallon). What would be the best balance of lighting for an SPS dominant tank? One of each, two whites one blue, two blues and one white, all 50/50....you get the point. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Tristan, of course it's a matter of taste, but personally I would either do 1 white in the middle with 1 blue on each side, or , you could do 2 50/50's with one blue. Either way would be sweet!
You can always check them out at ORG to see how you like the different colors.

Just to once again throw in my 2 cents, I see a lot of people here wondering whether to get the white, blue or 50/50 strip.
IMHO, each one serves a different purpose and has pros and cons:
- All blue - AMAZING actinic supplementation, visible even when all T5's/Halides are on. By themselves, they make the corals absolutely glow. However, these do not add any shimmer to the water when the T5's are on.
- All white - Add shimmer to the water even when T5's are on. But their colour on their own is awful. It is a warm white, and makes your setup look like a shallow riverbed rather than an ocean. This light's only purpose IMHO is to add shimmer to a T5 set-up.
-50/50 - I see no real function to this light. It is not as good at adding actinic "pop" as the all-blue, and does not add much shimmer when T5's are on. In other words, it does a little bit of what the other strips do, but nowhere near as well.
I would not run a reef on an all-reefbrite lighting scheme. I think these lights are awesome supplementation, but don't have enough colour mix to do the job entirely on their own as well as T5's.
So which strip(s) should you buy IMO? If you are already running a T5 setup (as most are who asked the question), get one or two all-blue strips for actinic supplementation (it will be awesome, you'll see), and use your T5s to run white/purple bulbs. If you want shimmer in your water, get no more than one all-white strip. And skip the 50/50s IMHO.

OK, to answer all the PM's about the newest Reefbrite LED's, the distributor has posted the following info on their existing thread on these lights
"As I am sure these questions will follow shortly, but is the pricing that we anticipate to see the Reef Brite XHO series at;
15" $184, 24" $247, 36" $315, 48" $336
Please also note that these are just released. The units are currently being produced and are expected to ship out to us in the next 1-2 weeks, so they should be reaching stores in your area in about 2-3 weeks. I would not anticipate any discounts on these fixtures in the forseeable future, as I am sure that will be the second question "
Notice the prices are up to %35 more on the new fixtures.
So.....in Tom's never ending quest to have happy, long term customers.:bravo: He is willing to give a %5 discount on the new fixtures to those joining the group buy!!:pompom: (Tom is not getting any discounts from the supplier. This discount is solely from his profit.)
PM me to join the group buy and get this exclusive discount from Oakville Reef Gallery!

Some of you may recall this thread where we compared a 150W halide to the Reef Brite LED's but for those of you that do not here is a breif summary with pics of course:
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1056&g2_serialNumber=1
The tank on the left is running a single 150W Halide with a phoenix 14k lamp
The tank on the right is running 4 of the 15" Reef Brite LED stirps. It a bit hard to see in the pic, but a elevated look at the trim kit will reveal this
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1066&g2_serialNumber=1
But as you can see in the first pic, the tank on the right is much brighter.
Now how about the power consumption difference?
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1064&g2_serialNumber=1
Peak draw on the 150w Halide was 167 Watts, where as the continuos power draw was 164 watts compared to the 53 watts from the LED's.
So the 150 watt halide is drawing 310% more power.

I may actually be interested in 3 48" units for my new 75G build...
I have seen 1 white along with 2 blues at a local store and I was blown away with the color. Would I be wise to do 1 white, 1 50/50, 1 blue... or would I be best to stick with 1 white and 2 blues?
I would only be able to commit to this purchase if we reach the 20% discount.
P_Foster
April 11th, 2011, 12:22 PM
It really depends on what color you would like to have on the tank.
1 white, 1 50/50 and 1 blue will definately give you a higher intensity of light into the tank.
In the pic of the tank above we used 2 50/50 and 2 blue strips. Personally I found the color to be similar to the phoenix 14k but at a higher intensity.
So if you go with 1 white, 1 50/50 and 1 blue the color should be similar to the tanks pictured above, although the color distribution may be a bit different.
1 white and 2 blue will be a richer color and more blue, but not as bright. If you plan on adding more LED's down the road, this may be a good option especially while your tank is new and cycling. then as your corals load increases you can add another strip of white or 50/50. As you can see in Ottawa though, their tank is doing extremely well. I will see if I have some pics of that tank somewhere too.

Ok so I do have a few older pics of when the LED's first when onto the tank at our LFS in Ottawa.
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4103&g2_serialNumber=1
In this pic we can see the original lighting system on the tank, a current USA cf fixture.
And here is the upgrade:
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4105&g2_serialNumber=1
As the store was testing them out, in this pic the are litterally just sitting on the tank as they were changing strips to play with the color to see what they liked.
Since then they have properly mounted the strips on one of the Reef Brite 5 hole brackets. With the Reef Brite strips raised up a couple inches + the proper spacing and angle from the engineered strip the light dispersion is acually better. I will see if I can stop in sometime to get a good pic of this and the progress on the tank.
Now at address some earlier comments, I just got back from MAX in LA and I had several in depth talks with some of the very notable guest speakers, high end coral frag shops and of course the owner of Reef Brite, Joy.
The overwhelming concensus is that LED's work extremey well on softies and LPS but have a limited and different success with SPS. Now there are a great many people having amazing success with LED's on sps, I will even post some pics of a different LFS with the Reef Brites on a nano tank and amazing color in all their sps....
Everyone across the board though agreed though that for acropora specifically, maintaining the best coloration was much easier with a T5 + LED or halide + LED combo as opposed to strickly LED, regardless of the brand of LED. There were apogee par meters being used, tests done and data ploted through water (not air as some tests use even though this data is only very limited in its use...). Steven Pro went into some detail to speak about how some fixtures were passively cooled, actively cool and some did not even have heat sinks where they should be and why each of these was good or what the limitations were. At the end of the day though regardless of the fixtures being used it all came down to the same point as mentioned above, the easiest way to get the best coloration out of acropora specifically was from a combo of T5/halide and LED's.
It should be noted though that this does not apply for LPS and softies. I personally find that I get the best colors on my aussie acans in our tank that is exclusively running the Reef Brite LED's as opposed to our tank that is running a combo of ATI powermodule + Reef Brites. Please note that these tanks are on the same system.
So I dont know that I would recomend that you sell you ATI fixture just yet Chromey, unless your system is lps dominated, which it very well may be.
Ok, so now for some more pics...
Here are some pics from another local store. The cf lamps were due for replacing in their nano so apposed to replacing them, they removed the internals and litterally just put the Reef Brite LED strip in the canopy. I know that their intention had been to properly mount them, but this worked so well and a stores time is so limited that they had not quite gotten around to it yet.
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2630&g2_serialNumber=1
I hate taking pics in bow front tanks....
I did my best though, and you can see the acans are doing well and maintaining their nice coloration.

Some nice Fiji zoanthids and vietnamese zoanthids
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2614&g2_serialNumber=1
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2620&g2_serialNumber=1
And of course they did have some sps in this system too;
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2618&g2_serialNumber=1
There are also some acropora in the tank that are doing very well, but with the curved front I could not get a good pic. Maybe I will see if I can do a LFS toor sometime soon with my camera :)

Those are good pics of the tank with the three strips over it... although the pics do not do it justice and the growth has been amazing since those photos were taken.
I can vouch that everything in that tank just pops with the 2x blue strips and 1x white.
I hope we can reach the 20%....

I have a 6 bulb TEK Elite (thanks Tom) and Reefbrite 48" 50/50 attached to it and I have seen an increase rate of growth in my SPS since adding the Reefbrite in Jan/11. It is essentially like adding 2 more T5's to the set up.

There is a store in Ottawa here that is running Reef Brites on one tank, Max Spec on the next, and AI on the third tank.
They are all right next to each other in a nice line so that you can compare them.
When the daylights are on the Reef Brite and Maxspec look pretty much identical to the eye to be honet. They seem to have about the same cast, the same intensity and pretty much the same color.
But when just the actinics are on the Reef Brite looks 1000 times better. The difference in the pop in color of the corals is just incredible.
I did actually get a couple pics of the comparison of this but no matter what angle I was at I couldnt get a good pic as there was always the reflection of other tank in the store on the front of the tanks I was taking the pics of.
I will see if I can stop by at closing sometime and if they would be willing to shut the other tank lights off.

No, there's no frag right now. But if I want to put frags (SPS) there down the road, should I get a 50/50 instead? Or the refugium is not a good idea to place any SPS frag? And is the 50/50 OK for chaeto?
P_Foster
April 14th, 2011, 02:56 PM
I think the daylight would be better for the fuge as the light will be brighter.
Then if you decide to add actinics later you can always do so at that time.

If you are growing macroalgae in your sump, I would not put frags in there. If your algae grows around your frags, it can choke the frags and cause tissue recession/death.
Basically, if you are only hoping to grow macroalgae in your sump/fuge, you could use a white reefbrite, but it is an expensive overkill for something that could be done with a cheap light fixture and 60W bulb for about 10 bucks.
If you want to grow frags in a frag tank, a 50/50 reefbrite fixture would work, but might not produce the same coloration as MH or T5 lighting.
So either way, I would not really consider this for your needs in particular. Reefbrite lights are awesome as supplementation for an SPS system, or total lighting/supplementation of a LPS or softie tank.

They run on separate plug. The cord is pretty thin, however. If you tied/taped them together, it would not be any, or much bigger than a regular 3 prong plug, IMO.

Could you not just put a powerhead in the fuge directed at the SPS, without effecting the actually flow going through the sump? I understand it may affect life forms in the fuge, but you could isolate the flow somewhat, if need be. Just a thought. I have bought frags from someone who did just that and the frags were very nice and healthy.
Ideally, I would think you would need any frags to be in their own separate compartment, though.

Here are a couple updated pics from a store in Ottawa.
This tank is running 2 blue Reef Brites + 1 White Reef Brite mounted on one of the Reef Brite 5 hole brakets. YES the bracket really does make a diff for the color dispersion/blending in your tank!
This pic was taken at night with most of the lights off in the store and zero light coming from the front windows so this would be similar to what the tank will look like in your living room in the evening.

I've seen them running in person, and YES!!!! they are VERY sexy. The daylights are almost blindingly bright, and the actinics make the corals look like you're walking around in Avatar...
I'm working on a way to convince my wife that I need to invest in better lights than what I have right now... I think that the fact that no one carries PC lights anymore will be a good seller, but will be better once the bulbs I have now need replacing. (they're all brand new)

Honestly guys and gals- these LED strips give you the shimmer effect that is lacking when you have T'5's -don't miss out on these awesome prices -I paid full price for mine and would have jumped all over this deal if it was offered when I got mine.
Remember one strip is equivalent to 2 Actinic's with a lot less wattage and it doesn't need to be replaced every year! Essentially, it turns a T'5 6 bulb fixture into a 8 bulb!

Yuppers. Sorry for not clarifying.
I haven't seem the Org boys in a while. Looking forward to seeing them. Who knows maybe by now they've bought a cappuccino machine like a requested several years ago.
Wouldn't that be nice if you could enjoy a good cup of Jo at ORG with your buddies?

Mmmmm, cappuccino sounds good, but it needs to be a "Nespresso" machine. They have the best coffee - it's the only one that doesn't bother me. :)
Maybe I need to start a Nespresso group buy to get ORG to get one! LOL!:hihi:
Time's running out on this awesome group buy. Get your orders in!!

I should have posted the before and after pic above.
Here is the display tank in one of our local stores with cf's before:
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4103&g2_serialNumber=1
And here is the same tank with Reef Brites now:
http://reefwholesale.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=4330&g2_serialNumber=1
A few corals have changed or moved in the tank.
The keyna tree on the right hand side was there in the firt pic but it was quite small so you cant see it in the pic but now its nice and big!
The crazy neon candy cane has more than doubled in size since the reef brites have been added!
You can see the GSP covering over the neighboring rock and spreading up the glass.
Even the coraline algae is growing in much thicker as everything loves the Reef brites in this tank!

Was at my Buddies House yesterday looking at His 90G.
His Frogspawn has doubled in size(Softball to Football) and his Devils hand Looks just scary big.
Looks like he might have to give 1 to me, They are getting to big for his tank.

Is it possible to connect two 36" fixtures end to end for a 72" tank without using ceiling mount?
Chromey
April 30th, 2011, 03:03 PM
I think it would very Easy to connect them.
The come with a "L" bracket Plus you can buy the 3 and 5 Light bracket.
I have also seen 48" on a 72" tank, They Cover pretty good.
