I'm not sure of the exact % as our broker usually handles that...

BUT...

I ordered a lens kit from Circuit City in the US and had a friend pick it up and ship it to me here in Canada.

The lenses were $19.99 USD and the adaptor was $9.99 USD. Shipping cost was $9.00 USD. I paid for the items and shipping directly, and when they were shipped and brokered via UPS, these are the charges I received from UPS (in CAD):

Duty $0.64
Brokerage GST $1.59
Customs GST $3.40
COD GST $0.28
TOTAL GOVERNMENT CHARGES $5.91

Entry Prep Fee $17.25
Disbursement Fee $5.50
COD Surcharge $4.00

Total Invoice: $32.66 CAD

---on top of the cost of the lenses and the shipping! So 2 items costing $30USD cost me nearly $100 CAD by the time it arrived here!

OUCH to say the least!

All you have to do is have the person your buying the items from, say its a gift and there is no duty or taxes,as long as its under $200.00.I got friends in Florida that send me up half gallons of vodka all the time and they just say its a birthday present,or i'm there brother.Plus i had lots of other things sent up from other parts of the USA,from people i know and same applies.

I've bought stuff off EBAY lots of times, and i didn't have to pay any duty or taxes.Just make sure its under $200.00USD.If its a little more sometimes they will let it go,just depends if the customs person is a PRICK or not?:)

Pluff is correct...a 'person' can send up to $200 as a gift!

If it's being shipped from a business...then you WILL incur charges for duty/GST.

UPS doesn't charge a fee for any items made in the USA totalling less than 20USD. Anything above that and they charge. For example I purchased some fittings from Aquatic ecosystems, the items made in Isreal were exempt. throught the mail (USPS) Canada Post charges 5CDN to clear items valued up to 200CDN. After that you get into NAFTA items and exemptions, GOD only knows how to sort through that s**t.
That's been my experience, at teast dealing with companies or corporations. Any private seller you deal with, you should get them to value the items under 200USD.
My personal favorite is to have the items sent to FEDEX on the other side and make a day of it and bring it across myself
