View Full Version : SPS Progression (growth) pics.....

Ok...the idea is to post an SPS picture (then) and (now) and maybe inbetween. Anybody can buy large wild peices but can you grow a frag or small colony into something greater? That I think is the highlight of SPS keeping.

So I hope we can get a few people to particpate. Even if you dont have a before picture tell us about the frag and give us a colony pic with timeline.

I'll start...

Sunset Millepora aquired from Kevin Barry (KevinJFB) in April 07. Growth was slow the first couple of years with multiple problems and tank moves. Now its a beast.

Well I would say you pretty much have that mastered. Nice growth pics. Once my new system is up I hope to have half the success you have.

Nice Darryl

Here are a couple of shots from my last setup of a humilis that started out as a 3-4" cultured colony in 2004 (top right of last pic) and grew to rubbermaid size by 2009.

Sweet Andy.....Humilus is such a thick coral too. I imagine it isnt nearly such a fast grower as millepora. Amazing work. Thanks for posting.

Here is another. This is my Orange/Red (depeding who you ask) Monti Digitata. This one goes back to 2006 and was aquired from another great local aquarist - Dayne (I wonder how his tank is doing??). I aquired this piece in 2006 and I almost lost it somewhere along the way. Also been fragged more than a few times.

Ok....Im not giving up yet. Some others must have some pictures to share?

I'll post one more set and then no more unless we can get some others to participate.

This one was purchased in April 2010 as an aquaculture peice from ORG. Got a great deal on and I new it had potential. It has changed a lot. From green to more of a yellow and the polyps I would almost say are pink maybe red. Similar coloration to my pink lemonade in a way but different species. Im thinking this one is a.hyacinthus

That last pic you posted Darryl is wild... Some nice pics and growth sequences. It is nice to see some of progression shots. I find when I've been placing frags in my tank I really have no idea what shape or form they are going to grow into, which makes scaping the tank difficult.

Wish I had something to contribute, but this is not a "lack of growth" or "coral deterioration" thread. Maybe in a few months if this thread is still alive.

Well I give up...no one wants to play. :(

I'll join in. Actually kind of fitting since the four pieces in this first shot actually came out of your tank !!

On the left branch of the green acro in the centre - everything in front of the clown goby is new growth. I believe I put that frag in my tank early - mid december.

The small frag up front broke off of another piece during transport - it hasn't had much vertical growth, but is encrusting really well. The oregon tort in the back is showing steady visible growth as well. I forgot to take a pic when I put everything in so I have nothing to compare it too.

Also no before shot, but it's easy to see the hard line where the new growth is. I got this clam from reef raft sometime in september or october. The shell was totally white when I got it and very smooth - the new growth is nowhere as smooth as the rest of the shell - maybe because of calcium and alkalinity going up and down from manual dosing ?

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/5708/image2wu.jpg

The only before and after shot I have - I added this frag that came from Mike Caruso a few days before halloween, now just three months later - It's almost doubled in size. I swear you can almost SEE that thing grow if stare at it for a bit. I've also already cut a couple of small branches off of it for a friend.

I'm almost out of room to add more corals so now it's time to start letting everything grow out.

Wow, ya nice growth on those frags you got. That green a.abrolhosensis is a fast grower that is forsure. I find it doesnt like to encrust much though. Looks like the Oregon is doing well too.

Really? You got the same one from Ballgarry? It is very nice right now, it's not as blue as the pic obviously, but it's got lots of colour. I want the base to be blue aswell, but it's more purplish/browny/blue right now lol

I'm sure Uma wants a frag of this :)

Very nice everyone. Im glad we got some others to post some pictures....keep um coming!

Here is a blue tort I aquired in later 2008 or maybe early 2009 as a small frag (no picture of the small frag). I got from Dave Jelly and he called it his cobalt tort if I recall correct. Again was slow to get started because of tank problems and tank moves but its a fair size now.
