I've put together a DIY hood for my 45 FOLR tank running 4 - 36" 30 watt RO bulbs. I have the 2 ballasts ( Sylvania MB 2 x 40/120RS) mounted remotly. I'm a little concerned because these ballasts are running with a surfice temp of 180 F :eek1: Man that seems hot!! I have everything wired right and grounded and the ballasts literlilly hanging for circulation (and fear of fire). Is this Right? Is there a different ballest I can use for the 4 30 watt coralife I have. At $20 a bulb I hate to just dump and run. Any advice.

Danno,
Yowza, that does seem a little hot, but on the bright side, all cellulous based wood products (paper, wood, particleboard) does not burn until 451F

If you are that concerned about heat, simple computer (12 volt) fans will do the trick. Whenever I make my own light hoods I buy a cheap (metal) tool box ($7-8) and mount the ballasts inside. I use these boxes for either regular florescent /VHO/ metal halide systems. Once the ballasts are in place, cut a 3" round hole in the one end of the box and mount your cooling fan, make sure the direction of air is blowing outwards. Drill some small holes on the other end of the box and the air will flow through the box. You will need a 12 volt supply either in the box (door bell solinoid) or use a 12 volt power supply box that you can purchase at any radio or hardware store.
