Afss and myself went on a great roadtrip today.

We went over to the states to a to visit a guy I met on Reef Central. Super tank! and Dave is a great guy.

You can view it here
http://mistressreef.homestead.com/

He then took us to a couple of stores over there and we ended up at another guys place to get some cool Indonesian Rhodactis that I saw on Reef Central and wanted.

Hey Reefin

Very cool, Here is a point of  for ya though
I thought people would have trouble crossing the border with corals?

Sorry had to ask b/c I was under the impression it was a no no to the tune of a hefty fine $$$$ and possible jail time :eek2:

Thought I would ask, in case people were thinking of doing it.

Believe me I have looked into it if you want check out a thread at mops called " Corals from Tropicorium revisited"

Flavio had a run in some time back and voiced his take on it also.

Here is a excerp: that Jayson sent in
"Corals are not permitted period. Soft corals are attached to live rock. No matter how small it is it is considered live sclertian(sp) this is a CITIES controlled item.Live rock is also a CITIES item. Cost is aprox $150.00usd Fish are also controlled under the fish and wildlife act. In order to bring them into Canada you have to have a fish and willife permit Cost is aprox $55.00 usd. The items will be confiscated if they are found as well as you have a court date. Minimum fines are at $1000.00can and will going up to $2000.00 in April"

Available through CITES ( http://www.cites.org ) - though lately it's getting tougher to get them. You can't just get a permit to go shopping ... you have to have all the information on the INDIVIDUAL fish/coral/etc. you're exporting. So if you can worlk out a deal to hold certain items for you, then you can get a permit to allow you to get THOSE specific items...nothing more.

It's a PITA...and only going to be getting worse.

CITES permits normally take about 2-3 weeks to get processed.

The part that gets me is even for a frag you can't do it from,
ie a mother colony of Accro say that has been fragged many times over ex(gen 5), to me it is the perpetual long term life of the corals they are trying to protect and it makes sence that hobbiests can play a significant roll in this endevure to ensure the long term survival and I am talking about the corals with the highest mortality rate in captivity to be sure.

Good score Reefin Geek  maybe you will be able to frag it in a few years if not sooner and pass it on to a reefer and so on and so on, ok I will stop now and get off the soap box:)

I agree 100% that it's a PITA...especially where as "we" are dealing with AQUACULTURED corals! The process is in place to protect the natural reefs...but there has to be some changes to reflect the fragging and aquaculturing that is now commonplace.

CITES stand is that it all came from a wild-caught/harvested colony...and how do you know if it's aquacultured or wild??

BS and more BS!

I was under the impression that all flora and fauna listed in CITES is broken up into three sections or appendices.
1 OK for Import/Export no permit required
2 OK for Import/Export Permit required
3 Illegal for Import/Export except under very limited conditions. i.e. government or university sanctioned study.
Please correct me if I am wrong (BTW I usually am :))

Dman, that is my understanding as well. Also if you look up the actual species on the CITIES site, most fish and inverts are not even listed, which means that they are fine to bring into Canada and no permit would be required.

Unfortunately the kicker is live rock, live sand, Tridacnid clams, and most stony corals are listed under CITIES and require a permit. Also any softies or LPS corals that are attached to live rock would be covered due to the live rock, not the coral itself. So if it's attached to a tiny frag of live rock, guess what, now you need a permit for that lovely coral or softie.

Want a big mushroom colony on a rock, yup need a permit because of the rock.

So if you are bringing back a coral, make sure it is not attached to any rock, just the coral itself. With some corals this is fine, with others next to impossible. As for most fish, snails, crabs, shrimp, starfish, etc, they are usually not on the CITIES list, so you don't need any permits.

Of course do the research yourself first before bringing anything back over the border. Go to the CITIES site and search for any livestock you expect to be purchasing. If it is listed, you will need a permit.

There is also a great thread on this exact topic located here:

CITIES Discussion (http://www.canreef.com/ubb6/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000387)

Yes you are correct Dman:) as Canadawest has pointed out, I tried calling the wild life PH# that Jayson left but all I got was a recording ( out of the office till sometime in March).

I wanted to ask if they considered the round plug ( not sure what it is made of) the material people use to mount frags to, a rock?

This is usually made with porter cement. 100% man made.
Very tricky situation though. I to , disagree with the restriction on Aquacultured corals. Problem is, how do you prove that it was aquacultured.

Word of advise to newcomers...BUY LOCAL

I got those mushrooms FROM A REEFKEEPERS TANK, not a store. I did this because I have NEVER seen these things in a store or elsewhere for that matter. So why am I now the criminal?
I have got something that is very unique( Eric Hugo is looking into a proper ID but is still puzzeled) , and as long as they reproduce I will be fraging them to other tanks. All AQUACULTURED no reef destroyed isnt this what we are striving for anyway?

I managed some time back to download the entire CITES document, its' a four part pdf file :eek1:
If anyone is intersted I would be happy to forward it to them so that they may peruse it at their own leisure.
Read at your own risk, great for people with insomnia:>
