I honestly don't know anything about gem tangs. but if they are so rare why are they even being sold at LFS????
But in that case I think the price is more than fair. Doing a quick google search they seem to go up to $3,500.

Unlike other "rare" livestock such as Leafy Sea Dragons, Gem Tangs do very well in captivity. Tons of tanks on RC that house Gem Tangs that do well and thrive in an aquarium environment.
Bottom line it's all about supply and demand and what you have here is a tang that comes around for sale every couple of years. People are willing to pay for it, so it sells for that much.
There's a post on RC where a guy in South Africa actually found one in low tide on the beach and took it home to keep in his tank! Pretty much like winning a lottery:)

Actually us saltwater guys have nothing on the price of fresh water fishes.
Japanese Koi routinely run anywhere from $1000 to $100000 but worst are Arrowanas. There was an Platinum Arrowana that was listed for $250,000 British Pounds in Singapore a while back and it had a droopy eye!
Just be thankful that you are saltwater lover:)

...and only available at a certain time of year in a specific region, when they come in from the deep to shallower waters.

Trust me, he don't feel that way. :) It's like you walk out to your backyard and found a grasshopper. LoL
But it's quite an effort and accomplishment for Reef Raft to bring in one such shipment into Canada. I know I did it before (not gem tang) :P It's a huge risk.

Thanks for clarifying it for me. I'm not trying to knock anyone - i just thought that if it was rare it might be coming close to extinction. So bringing a fish like that would not be anything to be proud off.
But in that case... way to go RR. I haven't been to your store in quite a while. So i think I will need to swing by when I'm in the area next.
In terms of supply and demand: you got it - RR hit a jackpot on this one. :-) Seems the price is reasonable for what it is.

Don't think it's like finding a grasshopper, if it was, it would be a lot cheaper then what they go for:)
Hey Hubert, why don't you trade Reefraft's Gem Tang for one of your Mochi Clowns??? If you do, you'll both have two of the rarests fishes out there!!
