I bought 2 clowns (ocelarus) on thursday evening from 2 different LFS and did a beginner mistake: did'nt quarantine them.

Friday evening I realized that the clown that came from Big Al's had the famous Ich.

Since I'm new at this, I had to do some research and it seems the only 2 remedies are either Hyposalinity http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-jones/hyposalinity.html or copper treatment. and that the fresh water dip only help the fish to get rid of the Ich temporarly.

Both meant that I had to get a quarantine tank. So I bought a 20 gallon tank, heater and an aquaclear filter for 60$ at the local LFS and transfered some of the water of the main tank to put the fish in. I'm going for the hyposalinity treatment. I put both Clowns even though only on had the symptoms. They are always together so I did,nt want to take the chance. I have also a yellow tang that I put in the 20 gallon tank. I know that it requires a big tank, but for the length of the treatment (around 4 weeks), will it be ok??

I just hope that did'nt screw up with the treatment process. The only thing appart form the fact that I did'nt have a tank set up for this is that I don't have a refractometer to monitor the density precisly.

Anything you guys think I might have missed?

I bought some base rock for them to hide and feel a little bit more secured.

Thanks,

Michel

I forgot to mention that I have a cleaner schrimp in the main tank. It did'nt seem that interested in cleaning the fish in the short 24 hours that the clown displayed the Itch problem.

There must be a thread at this forum about garlic use for ich treatment. Make a search.

I had a similar problem a while back. Lost my yellow tang as a result, and a clown a week later. The freshwater dips helped for a day at a time, but then things went right back. Quarantined my regal tang and treated him with copper and wow! what a difference. It;s been 4 weeks now he looks great. I'd say go for the copper treatment in the hospital tank (only). You don;t want copper in with your invertebrates.

Hyposalinity & Copper both work well if caught in time.

You can also do a search for Garlic withing the forums (as stated by kadaytar above) - as it does seem to help too.

I use KYOLIC Garlic Extract Liquid - found at local health food stores. Soak your fish food in the KYOLIC (enough drops to coat the food you will be feeding) for about 20 minutes before feeding...

I bought some garlic Guard after seeing one of your previous post. The 2 clowns are eating and seem quite pleased at a density of 1.010.

Good to hear!

Clowns are quite tough - so you should be alright!

Cheers,
