As long as it is sch.40 PVC it's fine.

PVC is not toxic below 350F or so. If you were to burn/ignite/char it then it will release the chlorine molecule and be very toxic if you inhaled the fumes. But believe me you would leave the area very quickly! Humans are very sensitive to chlorine in this form and can detect levels far below the health damaging levels.

VCM does not, theoretically, occur in PVC polymer produced with perfect quality control. However, this highly toxic and carcinogenic compound has been found to be a trace component of PVC. There have been reports of VCM detected in drinking water that has been standing for a period of time in PVC water pipe. The main risk of VCM, however, has been found to be primarily to workers in plants producing VCM or producing PVC resin from the VCM monomer; and also to people living close to such plants. Exposure hazard to workers, neighbors, and users of PVC products is not theoretically inherent in the process, but in fact occurs due to inevitable lapses in production quality control and housekeeping. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC, or Vinyl) is one of the most commonly used materials in the consumer marketplace. We find it in packaging, construction and automotive material, all categories of products, including toys, and medical equipment. PVC contains Phthalates, which accumulate in body tissues, and can damage liver, lungs, and have been shown in lower mammals to damage reproductive organs. Phthalates are freely given off by plastics in which it occurs, and because it is fat soluble, is found in quantity in meats and cheeses wrapped in PVC packaging. Although Phthalates show almost no toxicity in adult humans in acute (short term) doses, even at high doses, the cumulative nature of phthalate toxicity results in toxic effects even at very low dosage when ingested chronically (over a long period of time). Very young infants do not metabolize Phthalates as well as adults, and so are at greater risk of harm. The common availability of Phthalates in the consumer environment causes inevitable chronic ingestion for almost all modern industrial consumers. To reduce exposure to Phthalates, we recommend that consumers wash with fairly hot water the top layers of packaged cheeses and meats, and store them in polypropylene or polyethylene bags or containers, or preferably in glass and ceramic. Vinyl utensils should not be used for hot foods, particularly infant feeding, since warming increases emissions of phthalates. Medical patients, particularly those undergoing transfusion and dialysis, should inquire if tubing and other equipment not made from PVC is available.

Anyway, considering the sensitivity of these animals -especially the inverts, it seems like it would be a very good idea to thoroughly rinse any plastic before it is used - I have always soaked stuff overnight in salt water when possible. This is a good argument in my opinion to avoid bottled water and obtain one's own filtering unit

abs is not used in potable water situations because of the pressure issues...............abs leaches NOTHING into the water .

In otherwords:
As long as you don't light it on fire...you're safe! :D

It is my understanding that the ABS glue (yellow stuff) is toxic for several days until fully cured. From my own experience it is much much slower curing then the stuff used for PVC, apart from that, yes it is inert for our uses. Just don't build something and put it into service an hour or 2 later, wait a couple of days to use it.

To test this, I have glues 2 parts together, waited a day, then scraped deep into the joint with a knife and yes, I could smell the solvent..

Hi Greg,

Good idea :) on the srape/smell test

I decided to use PVC glue instead of the yellow stuff, what I find works well is if the pipe is a tight fit ( hard to take appart when dry and most seem to be ) I just seal the outside of the joint then there is less chance of glue/toxins getting into the water.

Then let sit and dry 24hrs.

What I am actually doing is setting up 2 rubber maid containers with a 2" pipe in between ( so I can take the 55gal out to get drilled and use it as a sump) also add some baffles in for a fudge.

I was thinking of adding fittings into the sump for my cal reactor besides the skimmer.

Just not sure where I can get the fittings?

Reefnut,
Have you had any luck finding fittings?
If not there is a place in TO here that'll have what you need, they take VISA and will ship.

Over the boarder?

Check with your local plumbing and pool supply companies.

If no luck there...send me an e-mail of what you need, and I can get it here locally for ya!

I got my 2" bulkhead fitting from the pool supply store on Highbury Ave. in London. It works great. As for finding PVC pipe, I have been out of luck myself. I think my next trip will be to Plumbhouse on Dundas St. to see if they sell fittings and pipe to the public. Happy Hunting, let me know where you find the stuff, and I will do the same.
