I got some garlic extract to use 4 or 5 drops on flake food once a week as medication/prevention for fish diseases (it is expensive stuff, but should last a while). It says on the bottle that there may be trace alcohol residue in it. Does anyone else use this? Is it safe?

I used fresh garlic juice to treat black ich on my tang. My fish are better, but I don't think my coral (soft leather mushroom) liked it.

I don't know what brand you are using...but the best available is a product called KYOLIC. It is available in health food supply stores. It's not cheap, but you only use a small amount - so it lasts a long time.

I was recently sent a new product from Seachem to test out - called Garlic Guard. It comes in a 500ml bottle (and a smaller 250ml as well). I always use garlic when I add any new fish - and also at least once a week to help with the fishes slime coat.

The KYOLIC works GREAT (2-years using it). The new Seachem product seems to work well too (smells like super-strong garlic). Product discription:

Garlic Guard
Garlic Additive/Appetite Enhancer
Freshwater & Saltwater
Reef & Plant Safe!

Shake well before use. Soak food in GarlicGuard before feeding. Safe for use with medicated foods (to elicite a strong feeding response to the medicated food). For example, for enhanced effectiveness against Ich and other paricites use Seachem's Focus and Metronidazole as follows: Add 1 measure of Metronidazole to 1 measure of Focus per tablespoon of frozen food. Completely soak the food mix in GarlicGuard, refrigerate, and feed once or twice daily for 1-2 weeks.

Ingredients:
garlic extract, ascorbic acid (as a preservative).

Guaranteed Analysis:
garlic extract: 9900 ppm, allicin (active ingredient): 130 ppm, Vitamin C: 1000 ppm

I actually did feed small pieces of garlic to my 7' clown trigger and Powder Blown Tang.
The clown trigger would eat everything.
Powder blown tang only eats when he is really hundry not all the time though.
I don't know if it's bad or good to feed garlic directly, but I don't see any problem with the fish.
It's just my experience to share with.

It is the KYOLIC that I bought. I haven't used it yet but I will. Thanks AJ.

My mushroom leather coral is still closed after at least 2 days. Was it the garlic? I found a hermit crab on it last night, and shoo-ed it off. Is it possible that the hermit crab is bothering it? All the water quality is good. 0/0/0 for amm, nitrite, nitrate. Phosphate is 0.1ppm, dkh is 9, calcium 375, temp 77.2, pH 8.2. Lights are on 12hours per day (4 VHO - 2 actinic and 2 50/50). I have the coral around 4-5" from the surface.

All I have done since it was healthy is add garlic juice to feedings and add some macro algae into a fish net that was hanging into the water on the other end of the tank from the coral (while I was building a refugium). The macro is in the refug since last night.

I am using Galic Guard, I think it really works for ICH but that may or maynot be true

One thing I do notice is that I find that my Potters angel seems to loose color when I feed him garlic soaked zooplankton

I cxannot say for sure but thats what I have observed

My Mushroom leather doesthe same thing every week or so It wont sprout up and then sheds a white skin after that its back to normal until it does it again. Seem to be growth related to me
But I know some experts here can maybe shed some light on this

Regular garlic cloves from a grocery store.

I'm a little lazy and buy the minced garlic in a jar.
