Hi there,
I am just in the process of setting up a 180 gallon reef tank. I am now collecting all the equipment. So far I have chosen an ets 800 skimmer, two 50/50 flourescents, 2 super actinics and three 250 watt reef sun halides, a red sea wavemaker, a 2700 gph dolphin pump and two Iwakis (for the internal independent wavemaking system), and a 60 gallon sump. I still need an RO unit, calcium reactor, sand, ....and all the test equipment. I was wondering what you thought about this list and what type of RO unit and calcium reactor you would suggest.
thanks

Both Kent and Spectapure are good units, but a bit pricey. You will likely be looking at a minimum a 35gpd unit. I'm not really up on RO units so hopefully someone else will chime in. :)

Hey Shirley,
Did you completely miss the discussion on Canreef about RO/DI units?
I got mine from ReefPure, and it was dirt cheap. Got a 100gpd with all the trimmings for around $200CDN after shipping. Check out the thread on Canreef, it has all the information you need.
PS... It's so much nicer making your own RO/DI top-up and change water rather than lugging 2 five gallon jugs to Safeway for just RO water.

before you go ahead and purchase a ro unit. dont look at price, remember you get what you pay for! without going into scientif form I'll explain it really simple. the membrain is what removes unwanted bacteria. now the bigger the holes on the membrain the more stuff gets through. the smaller the holes the more it filters the water. so look at the size by asking your retailer and stop looking at the price tag!

I am using a Spectra pure (60 gal per day) and i really like it. I bought it from MOPS as well.if you have any questions about this RO Dan Cole is a great guy to talk to. 1 thing i didn't see mentioned is that you need at least 50 psi to run them properly. I had to buy a booster pump cause i live in the country and use a well. If you have hard water you might think about a water softener because it will deplete the live of the RO as well as the filters. The Spectra pure also uses different brand names of filters.
in my opinion you get what you pay for but your home work can safe you a lot of money and aggravation.. HTH

AJ - Is there any chance you can get better pricing? I think people aren't biting because the pricing might be a little on the high side. :)

Paul,
I make less then 10% on the RO/DI units I sell/make.
ie. my 4-stage 50GPD unit - sells for $289.00 - I make a whopping $18.00 selling it.
I don't import items made in China...I use real John Guest fittings...I use true DOW TFC membranes...
I would rather sell quality then make a chunk of change.

I have a 4 stage 50 GPD EcoWater in my kitchen ($800 three years ago) and I just purchased a 6 stage 100 GPD RO/DI reef-filler from Aqua-Safe in BC (via e-bay).
Just filled my new system of over 350 gallons with the Aqua-Save and the TDS was at 0 at the begining and at the end of filling the tank (house water is apx. 170 TDS in Oakville).
As for how lonf the filters will last, can't say. All Aqua-Safe filters can be replaced with whater brand you like - standard size housing. I paid $170 including shipping and can't complain about the performance for the last 2.5 monthes.

I've been using an Aquasafe Canada RO/DI filter for quite some time and I'm very happy with the results. I was the one that convinced Ed that DI was a good idea and that he would be able to sell them. I added my DI on after-the-fact.
He's been nothing but 100% with me and I highly recommend him to everyone.
Having said that, I'm fairly confident that the quality of the filters is not the same as some of the other stuff that's out there. I'm pretty sure they're coming from China.
Regardless, the proof is in the pudding and it's still putting out TDS readings of around 6... I'm very happy with it.
