At Last.....The tank is here!

I have been running a 110Gal tank with 35Gal sump for some time now, but due to the fact that I would like to have a large diversity of life in my tank without problems - I have been trying to decide on a NEW larger tank.

Here are some pics of the new baby! 97"x24"x24" - center overflow/bio-chamber, bottom drilled/dual 2" bulkheads - StarPhire glass - mitered edges - Euro-bracing - and the list goes on! The black 'box' on the right is the bio-chamber/overflow - and the white thing in the middle is a double-size roll of paper towel (to add to showing the actual size). Starting the stand and hood this week - and when it's time to place this monster on the stand...I'm renting an engine hoist! :D

Was this bugger ever HEAVY!!! :eek1: :eek2:

Well you see the MONSTER above...here is the "IDEA" for the stand for it.

As pictured:

4"x4" framing

Stand section to the left - 5' high - 24"x10"x12" Reverse-lighted Refugium to sit on top - gravity fed back to tank - Internal area designed to house 48" skimmer

Not sure of finishing materials yet - open to ideas!

Stand to measure 36" high + tank of 24" = 5' tall to top of tank

Dual 30Gal sumps + calcium reactor + plumbing + GFCI electrical panel, etc. to be housed under tank

Hood to be added - dual 400w MH + VHO's for actinics

Any input on this idea - positive or negative - is appreciated!

The way it's designed - enclosed "box" with 2-bulkheads at the bottom. You will see in the pics the larger chamber with the 2 holes. The bulkheads go in the holes (obviously) , and then a piece of eggcrate goes on top of the bulkheads. The chamber can be filled with bio-balls or other bio media, and then there is a combed cover that goes on the top (same as a normal overflow would have). The water then overflows over the media and into the sump. The other chamber on the top/right is made to sit well above the water level - even a bit taller then the tank walls (as can be seen in the first pic)- it is drilled out at the bottom to allow for the return lines. The chambers are made out of 1/2 glass and black silicone (same as the rest of the tank), and then covered with the same plastic that some overflows are made of to keep the bio-balls or other media out of viewing. Pics below:

great tank AJ As for the stand , what about builing it so the bio chamber is covered as well? Also not being a big fan of bio balls for filtration ( your sand bed your doing will take care of that ) why not put a couple of standpipes in there and make that your refugium ?

Just my .02

In anycase you will have a nice setup when it's all said and done.
You'll be broke;) but you'll have a nice set up

By the way did I mention I'll have to give the dog a bath the day you have to lift that thing. Yeah ... sorry I cant make it

Just kidding just give me a shout

Don't I know it!! Then again it's LIGHT compared to the freakin tank!!! It is in 2 pieces...the 4x4 section and the 2x4 section are seperate and only bolt together with 2 lag bolts...so the 4x4 section only weighs in at about 200lbs! :D

As for it getting stocked...it will be a while 4-sure! That's a LOT of tank to fill!! I wish I had it set-up a while ago...I would have LOVED to have been able to grab a few frags from the frag workshop @ the last MAST meeting...but I didn't want to stress them out during the transfer!

Eiter way....I'm accepting frag donations starting next week! :D ;)

Well...I have the stand done except for the stain, trimming and adding the doors!! WooHoo! It's ALMOST time to HOIST the tank onto it and install the sumps and refugium! Ahhhh - will it never end? ;o)

Here are a few pics of the progress - I have the plumbing all layed-out to make sure all will work as planned :D

*Pic1 - Electrical panels installed, Plumbing placed - the 2 900GPH pumps to the right will be placed IN the second sump for the returns. The 2" pipe sitting on the bottom of stand will connect the 2-sumps via the side-drilled bulkheads; I'm hoping the with the water having to travel this distance, any micro-bubbles from the skimmer will at least be at a minimum! :D
http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/220-stand-plumbed.jpg

*Pic2 - This will be the one of the 3 returns entering the tank. I'm not fond of powerheads...so there will be Loc-Line added to the end of the 90-degree elbow to adjust flow direction throughout the tank, and the ball-valves are to control the flow rate. These Ball-Valves are sweet! They are a double True-Union built right into the valve! I like it! :D
http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/220-plumbing1.jpg

*Pic3 - Here is a close-up of where the bulkheads drain down to the sumps. These 2" Ball-Valves are the same double true-unions too. Are they ever MASSIVE! Should work great though to help me regulate the flow into the sumps! To the left you can see where the 3/4" return line goes through a double True-Union/Ball-Valve and through the stand where it will enter the tank. This will allow me to disconnect the return here with the ball-valve closed to prevent draining all the water in the line!

Here are some shots of the finish work being done.

If you look carefully---check out the boarder strip at the intersection where the tank will sit! Awe...Ain't that cute! :D

Still playing with it to get everything lined up 100%...but these give an idea of what it will look like once it's stained.

hey AJ...this is exactly what i would like to use in my setup as well....to hell with powerheads!! to have a sump hiding all of that hardware only to have powerheads in the tank is a dumb proposition to me...i cant wait to see how you set them up...i was thinking that i could get away with just a few ball joints and a nozzle running down the front corner of the tank...also..are you using ball valves for each of the loc line nozzles...also what loc-line system are you using as far as diameter? cheers!!!

I agree 100%! I hate PWRHDS in the tank! Plus it's only asking for trouble especially with anemones! I found that out the hard way! :eek2:

I will be having a 3/4" pipe running the length of the hood...from that there will be a "T", a ball valve and a 90-degree elbow (http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/220-plumbing1.jpg) - connecting to 3/4" Loc-Line for EACH of the 3 returns. (Click above link for image).

So I will be using a ball valve for each circulation entry point (x3), plus one to regulate the refugium, plus one below the tank where the vertical run starts, plus one on each of the return pumps. (x7 in total - plus all my ball valves are true-unions too, so I can break the plumbing down in numerous places for maintenance/cleaning.)

I will continue to post pics showing the progress. The stand is now IN-PLACE and now it's just the fun of hoisting the 900+lb monster onto the stand, finishing the plumbing, and placing the final edging onto the stand (to blend it into the wall beside it).

:mixed: Oh my aching back :mixed:

about the union valves where do you getthem?
and how much are they to buy ?
For the return to the tank you have a pipe running the lenght of the tank, and have 3 valves that jet out just below the water right.

I got them at a local plumbing supply store here in TO...if you can't find them, I can get them up here for you and ship them to you. I bought a LOT of items at once so I got a bit of a discount...I bought x2 of the 2" ball valve/true-union's for $40-something each, and x7 of the 3/4" ones which were $20-something each. I also bought 50-some feet of PVC and a bunch of 90° elbows and "T"s.

As for the installation...you have it right. The horizontal pipe will run the distance of the tank, and about every 2.5' there will be a "T" with a ball valve/union and a 90°-elbow connecting to Loc-Line. This way I can individually control the flow (valve) and the direction (Loc-Line) for each return. I am thinking about adding Sea-Swirls too...but at over $250 EACH...dropping $750+ is out of the question right now. Maybe later! Right now, I just need to get the 600+ lbs of Live Sand into the tank...and then make a few $$ and then get another 200+lbs of live rock...let it fully cycle, and then sell everything I own to stock the thing! :D

AJ

The new tank and stand look awesome great job:thumbsup:

I agree with you and maimz power heads in the tank don't do anything for me either, and even with gaurds on them you can still get something stuck in em plus you get the odd chatter/rattle and the suction cups they come with don't really suck but do if ya know what I mean.

Loc lines and the T 's are the way to go IMHO I was thinking Sea swirls also but at over $250 EACH it's out of the question right now. Maybe later! I hear ya but the reef will look awesome I am sure when you are done:)

I've got two 3/4" returns on my 280. I have a 3/4" loc-line nossle hose on one and a 1/2" loc-line spray bar on the other. The 1/2" spraybar probably puts a fair amount of back pressure on the return pump but I'm going with it anyways. The 3/4" locline with the straight out nossle creates a narrow jet that really limits where you can direct flow. The spraybar spreads out the current over a much broader area. AJ, what nossle are you using at the end of your loc-line. Do you sell loc-line and accessories.

Andy

We do have the Loc-Line product line.

As for the nozzle - I haven't decided what will be best yet. I guess that trial and error will tell in the end. I was thinking that the fan-shaped nozzle would likely be the best for coverage...but this is only an assumption as I personall have not worked with it in the past.

Any input/advice would be appreciated - and I will post what is or isn't working for people's reference!

hey..i thought that the flared nozzle would also provide the best coverage but im not sure if the corners would injure livestock..what do you think? im definitely going to be setting up my system using this stuff as im sure it cant be beat...also its not even that expensive..when will you have the prices listed?

Well the sumps and refugium are finally here...

Tank goes on the stand tomorrow for the plumbing and then comes the wet-run with tap water. MY GOD 240Gal is a lot of water! I did a leak test on the tank (on the floor) yesterday...took forever to fill and even longer to drain! :D

I am sure glad I purchased the new ReefPure 200GPD RO/DI unit...I would have been here for a WEEK just filling it!

I will try to explain my chaos! :D

The entire system consists of a 240Gal starphire tank with dual 2" bulkheads in the overflow, 1-40Gal refugium and 2-40Gal sumps. The large black box in the tank is the overflow and return holes. The 2 AquaMedic Ocean Runner 3500 (900GPH) pumps will send the return water through 3/4" PVC across the back of the stand, up through the return holes drilled in the bottom of the tank and to the horizontal bar you can see above the tank. This vertical pipe also "T"s off to a ball-valve to control flow into the refugium. The horizontal bar has 3 "T"s with ball valves that will connect to Loc-Line to add circulation/flow to the tank. All the above-tank plumbing will be hidden inside the hood I am constructing. There will be two 24" florescent lights above the refugium, housed in a matching hood. Lighting for the primary tank will consist of VHO for actinics and two 10,000k MH - either 250W or 400W (haven't decided that yet). I am also considering the Radium set-up. There will be a BLACK (to highlight the colors of the livestock) backing on the tank, that will attach to the top rail of the tank.

Pic#1 - Basically you can see the whole set-up.

Pic#2 - As seen in the first pic, the tank at the top left will be a reverse-lit refugium with macro-algae and Miracle Mud. The plumbing with the ball valve will 'feed' the refugium, and you can see the bulkhead and plumbing that will allow for the gravity return to the tank. All sides of the refugium will be covered (boxed in with wood) except for the front panel (for viewing). The tall cabinet below the refugium will hold the protein skimmer (3' Klaes) and the calcium reactor/Co2 tank/regulator and pH/ORP/etc. controllers.

Pic#3 - This is the circulation system. These will have Loc-Line added once fully plumbed and running.

Pic#4 - These are the 2 40Gal sumps. The 2" PVC will connect the two sumps well below the water line. As you can see, the overflows drain into the first sump, and the return pumps are housed in the second sump. With this separation and with the water having to pass through the 2" PVC, I am hoping to keep the micro-bubbles entering the main tank to a minimum.

Here are the pics.

Well...

It's time to say G'bye to my trusty old Kent 60GPD RO!

With the new tank going (plus my other 110Gal and 55Gal personal tanks)...not to mention the business too...there was NO way the Kent was gonna keep up!

So... VOILA - my new 200GPD 7-Stage RO/DI unit.

Here are a few pics...pics don't show the Float valve-auto top-off solenoid/Booster pump/In-Line TDS meter/etc...

Thanks Doug...

The new filter ROCKS to say the least! :D I just finished installing it on the wall downstairs and running all the tubing for the sump auto top-off, the drinking water system and the line to the storage tanks. Did I mention that I hated doing plumbing! ;)

Stephane...

As you mentioned, we do carry the EcoSystem Marine Mud and other items. The prices are:
5lbs - $65.00
10lbs - $120.00

I am considering using the mud in the refugium...but I haven't 100% decided yet. It's still a toss-up between the mud and a DSB.

I will be running a skimmer on the tank regardless. EcoSystem suggests that you can go skimmerless, but using one will not hurt any of the benefits of the mud and at least will only protect the investment of livestock. I think that I will install a 3" Klaes skimmer to handle the volume of the tank, 2 sumps and refugium. Plus, I will have at least a moderate-high bioload once finished. Better safe then sorry! :D

The tank is filled and is cycling with 600+ lbs of live sand now. Just finished a Diatom bloom...but it seems to be gone now. Last time I checked parameters, the tank was:

SG = 1.024
Amm = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 7
pH = 8.2

So it's almost done and ready for the next step.

I'm in the process of working out the details of the lighting and the hood now...so once I figure that out - then the construction begins.

Sorry for the lack of updates...just have been swamped! I will try to get some pics up soon.

Hmmmmm, I have an 8 gal with an return overflow, that would make a good refugium above my tank. Perhaps some MM would fit the bill. I imagine its dry shipped.

On a secondary note, while were talking merchandise,:D. I see you carry German equipment. Any chance of carring Tunze skimmers.

Sounds like a good plan to me. There should be no problem shipping the MM to you via normal courier.

German equipment = QUALITY! So yep! We do carry the Tunze magnets...so I think that I have access to the skimmer line too.

I will double check this and let you know for 100%.

Thanks folks...

Doug...the Nikon CoolPix 995 does all the work, I just point the camera and tripod the right direction. :D

jb1974...these are some of the nicest Tri-Color Acro's I have ever seen. This last shipment from Walt Smith exceeded our expectations by a LONG shot. Everything that came in was sooo beautiful...I need a bigger tank so I can bring one of everything home with me. ;)

I am going to re-aquascape everything very soon, as this is all just literally "thrown-in". After this re-design and the new lights...it should look a LOT nicer. I will post more pics as things progress.

Hello Mary...

Thank you for the nice words...The tank is looking better, but is a continual work in progress.

It's all about: Time + Patience + Money = A nice Looking Tank. Just remember to take things SLOW and try to do it the right way from the get-go...things will come together.

Again, thanks for the complement...it was very nice to hear!

Well...we have had a few Brown-outs in Brampton lately, and I have been a bit worried about the return pumps not firing back up again...so...

I upgraded my return pump.

I removed the AquaMedic OceanRunner 3500's, and drilled the sump again to be able to install a GenX PCX100 (1550GPH) pump in-line. All I have to say is WOW. Wicked power to say the least. It creates a little more noise then the OR's did, but it does a MUCH better job. This pump compares to the Iwaki 70RLT at a better price!! The GenX pump line-up are AquariumPros.ca's #1 selling pumps, and the ones we promote the most!!

Now that I had these 2 900GPH submersible pumps kicking around - I had an
I took one of my OR 3500's to my SW storage bin in the basement. I then ran some tubing from the pump through the floor and to my sump. Now when I decide to do a water change, I use the drain I installed in the sump to dump out how ever much water I want to replace, and then turn on the pump in the storage bin...presto...it fills my sump back up again! :D I will likely put it on a tank level controller that has a solenoid to shut the pump back off when it's full...but for now, I know that the sump is full again when my RO/DI top-off solenoid (right next to the SW storage bin) shuts off the booster pump (already set-up with a tank level controller).

Did I mention that I :angry:HATED:angry: to carry buckets of water upstairs to the tank from the basement every time I did water changes?!? :p

Just another addition to the Lazy-mans/womans Club!

Pics below.

Here is the right-side sump (I am running dual connected sumps; you can see the 2" PVC connecting them in the next pic - the left sump has all returns feeding it; all outgoing water is pumped from the right sump - both are 40Gal acrylic tanks - this is to help reduce any micro-bubbles from entering the tank). I have labeled the pic to show each item:

Here is the new GenX pump installed:

Well the move is done, and the re-set-up of the 240Gal tank has begun.

I have decided to locate the sumps in the sub-basement below the tank. This will allow me to increase my sump size (was 80Gal - now 120Gal), and add a DIY ATS (Algae Turf Scrubber) with dump bucket. I don't know how well this will work yet, but I will post an update once it's up and running.

I have started to finish the sump set-up, and am in the process of constructing the hood.

I have added the following equipment to the set-up:
x2 250Watt Electronic MH Ballasts (For the 250Watt Radium 20,000K bulbs that will be on either end of the tank)
x3 Parabolic Reflectors (Spider reflectors)
2x55Watt Compact Fluorescent Retrofit kit for the refugium (included reflector)
x1 13Watt Red Compact Fluorescent for night viewing
x1 SunLight Supply 400Watt Electronic Ballast (for the 400Watt Ushio 10,000K bulb that will sit in the center)
Check out the link to my photo gallery for some early pics of the above.

Now to finish the hood and plumb this bugger again!! :eek1:

Thanks Scott...

It is up and on the stand now...just not plumbed/or filled yet. Still want to make sure that the hood gets done before I fill it - and I still have to play with the stand a little too...so I don't want the water in the tank when I'm bangin the HELL outta the stand.

200+Gal of water and a few $$ invested in the tank makes me a little scared of it taking an over-shot hammer swing and .... :sob:

Preventative maintenance!! ;)

As lovely as it looks...it doesn't look that way now. Since these photos, I have moved myself & the tank to a new home. Set-up has been a very slow process - BUT -

I will be adding new pictures as I progress here.

Tank has been sitting for far too long...and thus I have started to get it back running.

Tank is fully 'cycled ', plumbed - just adjusted the salinity to get it back up to 1.024. Hood is not finished yet...but I will continue to work on it after the livestock is in.

I'll post some pics tonight if I get a second.

ajx22
October 24th, 2003, 01:35 AM
Alright folks.

Here are some pics from tonight. This is how the tank sits. I have spent the past few days adjusting the salinity (now @ 1.024) - and cleaning up the tank and sumps.

Over the next few days, I will be transporting the remaining good livestock from my 110Gal tank (my holding cell) - to the display tank. I have some rock that has decided to become home to numerous Aiptasia - and this rock will be spending some time out of the water to help me win this battle. There are also a few rocks with some Hydroids - and they will be venturing into the DRY life for a little while too.

For now...here are some pics (sorry to those without a high-speed internet connection:

Main Floor Level - Tank:

Whole set-up - hood & stand not yet finished.

Closer view of the return entering the tank (only one of the three Loc-Line feeds entering the tank visible):

Basement Level - Sumps & Equipment:

I have a 120Gal sump system - it consists of 3 seperate Lexan (acrylic) tanks that have been connected with bulkheads. This design allows for any and ALL bubbles to surface before entering the masive return pump. My drains from the tank, Ca Reactor & Skimmer - all enter the sump at the far end...then have to travel to the return pumps at the close end.
Full system:

This is the return (1-1/2") (throttled down a bit - see ball valve):

Jacuzzi 3/4HP return pump & Little Giant Pump (in background) feeds water through the Carbon Filter (shown in next photo):
http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/tank-oct-03/pumps.jpg

AquaMedic Carbon Filter (housing that holds Activated Carbon) - I run this once a month or so - depending on water clarity - for a few days.
http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/tank-oct-03/carbon-filter.jpg

These are my water holding vats. One on the left holds RO/DI water, and the one on the right holds premixed salt water. Both vats and the sumps/tank are auto filled/regulated via float valves and a solenoid system that turns the RO/DI unit's booster pump on/off as needed. (both vats have internal pumps to circulate the water):
http://www.aquariumpros.ca/userfiles/tank-oct-03/storage-vats.jpg

Custom 7-Stage 200GPD RO/Di filter with 20" Sediment and Carbon pre-filtration. Dual 100GPD RO Membranes, triple DI stages + booster pump (on the right), liquid-filled pressure guage + In-Line TDS meter (reads both in and out). Membrane Flush Kit and Flow restrictor can be seen at the bottom-left.

AquaMedic CalciumReactor 5000:

AquaMedic pH Controler - regulates the Co2 entering the reactor via a pH probe (in the reactor) and shut-off valve on a solenoid (fully automated).

Shut-Off Valve & Solenoid:

Just in case you were wondering...
Floor Support:

Protein Skimmer can be seen by visiting Oakville Reef Gallery as I am trying to sell it due to the reduced height I have to work with in the basement. If interested in it: http://www.aquariumpros.ca/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1633

Will post some more as I progress.....

Tim,

Yes. There are currently x2 250Watt Radiums (with spider reflectors) - powered by electronic 250Watt ballasts.

I will be adding an additional light to the center of the tank - 400Watt Iwasaki 6,500K - again, on an e-ballast (for assiting in SPS growth - NOT for viewing ascetics).

When using the e-ballasts...the Radiums are a very nice bluish-white - while with traditional ballasts - they are much more blue.

Pictures don't do it justice.

Just a few quick-shots - (to show color a little more):

i dont think 175 watt radiums are available eh AJ?
Even if they were my ballasts are not electronic...

but...when and if I upgrade my lighting then electronic
and radium is the way to go I think...but I am worried
because I have seen SOME 20K radiums that did NOT look great....and surrrrre did NOTTTT look like the pics you have
posted...I can handle WHITE BLUE but I cannot handle
ALL BLUE and even the ROCK looking blue!

So....I guess it is a tricky subject and combo for sure....

I just put 10K ushio in and honestly I am NOT impressed so far.....I mean...they look BETTER then my 6500 but basically
the only DIFFERENCE so farrrrr that I am noticing is
that they seem BRIGHTER and are adding EXTRA GLIMMER
on the water which I LOVVVVVE....but....spectrum wise
they are not much but only slightly whiter then the 6500....

So..I am nottttttt getting ENOUGH BLUE with them....

Now ...I just put them in last night so it is still early
perhaps...maybe there is a break in period whereby I will
get a completely different appearance in 2 weeks from now like the mfg says....but..right now...MMMMMmMMMMM
I am scratching my head and NOT THRILLED with the 10k
USHIO.... I may have to supplement with MORRRE actinics...

What is confusing me though is reefer MIke has same combo and his pics look LIKE PERFECT LIGHTING TO ME...but..I am NOTTT getting the tad of BLUE that his pics reflect and he is NOT using VHO...he is also using NO to supplement....so...I am surprised
I got the result I am getting...

Time will tell and if I gotta change it I WILL AND FAST.
thanks FOR THE PICS AJ....Is it possible to post morrre
pics of your tank at different angles...closer and farther....???

Thanks for the kind words Marcella. Slowly the tank is coming back to the way it was. ---slowly!

Soon you will have your tank, and will be stocking it too. Not to worry! Just a little more patience, and you'll be off to the races!

In respect to the Hydroids...they are a hitch hiker that either comes in on the live rock...or gets introduced to the tank in some other way. Kinda like Aptasia.

They are a nuisance species that can quickly start to take over your tank as they have a powerful sting that can and will kill other corals. They also spread very quickly - so it's a real pain to rid your tank of them. There is only one species of Nudibranch (sea slug) that is supposed to eat them...and they are hard to get within the aquarium trade. So...once you do get them in your tank...it can be a real battle to get rid of them.

Not only are they kinda unsightly - they can damage or kill the corals that cost so much $$$ - so it can really get discouraging. Unfortunately - most of the ones I have left in the tank are on rocks that house other corals...so I can't just remove the rocks. I got rid of a TON of them by removing the rocks and either scrubbing them with a HARD bristle toothbrush - or letting the rock dry out completely for a week or so...but some remain on the rocks with the corals. So I now can either take the chance with them in the tank and MAYBE loose a coral - or take out the rock(s) with them & the corals - and kill the Hydroids and the coral for sure.

Considering that I'm trying to keep the corals...especially the rare carpet anemones Stichodactyla tapetum that they seem to like to stay around...so I'm kinda stuck with them for now.

There is no way to guarantee that you won't get them...but by checking any live rock very carefully prior to placing it into your tank...you can reduce the risk.

They're not the end of the world...just a Pain in the butt.

HTH...

AJ,
Thanks for the encouragement. I know I can always count on you. That's why this site is so incrediblely amazing. Just like the owner.
Thanks for the tip on the Hydroids. I will keep a close eye when I go buy my rocks. I will bring a microfying glass when I go purchase it. I can't wait.

Unfortunately it's hard to tell what you're getting on your live rock sometimes...but checking it over a little before bringing it home can definitely prevent SOME unwanteds. The biggest issue with Hydroids is that the babies are so tiny - they can barely be seen ~ so only looking at the rock will not prevent their introduction to the tank.

It's a chance we all really have to take when using live rock.

Thanks Mike.

The move was indeed a HUGE pain in the BACK...especially the tank & related equipment. Disassembling a fully-stocked 220Gal reef is a HUGE pain and very time consuming.

I spoke with Dean a few times before he returned to the states...but there has been no way to contact him since he moved. I have spoken to a few others in the industry in the states...and they haven't heard from him for a long while either.

??? Kinda strange ...

Thanks for the kind words.

Hi there. One more question; about how much in materials does a stand like that cost, offhand? I need to build one monday for my new 100 gallon, and am hoping DIY will be a bit cheaper ;)

It should be much cheaper buying the materials and DIY rather then having it built for you...but only if you know what you are doing.

I can't remember how much I spent on materials when I was building my stand...but I also made mine MUCH stronger then I needed to JUST TO BE SURE.

I used all pressure treated 4x4 for my stand - with a 100Gal tank...I'm sure that you could get away with using 2x4's. Again...make sure that you know what you are doing in respect to making it very sturdy - or else you could end up with a collapsing stand that will destroy the tank.

You can always double-up 2x4's as well. 2x4's are a little easier to work with..

Well...my EuroReef CS12-3 has arrived...and is set-up and working GREAT.

I still can't believe how well packaged these units are shipped. It could easily survive the "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" treatment! :D

I was also amazed how easy the set-up of it was...literally - place in sump - press PVC elbow into place (between the pumps and the intake on skimmer body) - plug in!!!

Oh yeah I forgot to tell you about his table manners....I sent him to finishing school but he failed. I think he got that way when he was the only big fish in my tank and would eat out of my hands. With all those other fish he may take a while to do this again. Good to see he's happy and healthy.

Well...my new Sequence ReeFlo Hammerhead arrived the other day (Wednesday) - and I finally got the time to plumb it into my system.

After a few hours of tinkering with my existing plumbing - and compensating for the fact that I use rigid PVC - and the ReeFlo's output is off-set (not centered on the pump) - it is installed and pumping like MAD!!

Very impressed with the power from this pump...easy to plumb (other then extending a few sections of my PVC to accomodate the off-set) ... and surprisingly quiet for such a large pump.

The translucent housing is a definite PLUS - as is the convenient drain plug at the front of the housing.

VERY impressed thus far. Can't wait to see the hydro bills come down!! :D

Too tired tonight...I'll post some pics in the next day or so.

In a word ----> SWEET!!!

Hi AJ,

Love the pics in this thread. Just new to the hobby, but doing my research and steep learning curve along the way before making purchases. Learned lots from this website and will definitely be connecting with many of the members here in the future.

The picture you put up of the fish "little Pig"... what type of fish is that? Spot tang, blue tang, or Regal Tang? As well, what size of fish is it?

I'd like to put a small one in my 40 Gal in a couple of months, but I'm not clear from my research if Tangs will be good in my size of aquarium as they grow. Besides a couple of Clowns and maybe a jawfish, mandarin and another small fish, the Tang would probably be the largest fish. Did you get the Tang when it was small and is it still growing?

Thanks - Ron

Ron,

a lot of people around here say a 40 is way to small for a tang. same goes for the mandarin, although the mandarin has been done in smaller tanks. just needs a HUGE food supply and a well established tank.
they say for tangs, as babies a 55 is the smallest, but when they start to grow a 75 or even 90 is required.
stick with the clowns and jawfish.

Ron,

It is a Spotted Unicorn Tang... (Vlamingi Tang)

As stated...Tangs in general...need a large tank...and this guy can grow to nearly 15" (though about 6" now). They need a lot of swimming room...and require plenty of water volume to keep from fouling the system (big fish = big poop).

Thanks for the comments...and best of luck with your tank!

I hope you don't mind but I'll be stealing many of your ideas :-)

This tank looks great and your setup is beyond words. To read this thread from the beginning I'm not sure even you (AJ) had any idea it would grow to such a complicated and automated system

cheers mate, this is fabulous!!!

Unfortunately (for me) - the tank was sold to another member on AP.ca (current TOTM) - so you would have to talk to Joe to see any new pic's. :) I'm sure he's be only too pleased to comply with the request. ;)

I am currently in NB - left TO in June 2005 to handle some family issues here.

Thanks for the kind words re the tank. It was definitely my baby! New tank in the werks!!!!!
