When I was harvesting some macro today I was blown away by the amount of critters I have living in the thick macro mat filling my fuge. Here's a couple of pics. It's hard to see just how many critters there are though.

Last one.
All that macro started from a bag full that I got from Scott. Thanks again Scott. I have it lit with 3 24" NO Grow Lights 24/7

Very cool. A mandarin would be in heaven in there.

Lots of critters there. I was surprised at the # of critters in my fuge. I found myself watching them move around for long periods of time! They are neat to watch.

Muggy ole boy!!!! :)
mAN O MAN....I need more CRITTERS in my tank! I have no
place for a refugium nor desire truly to set one up...although if I ever have the tank in a spot where I could have a fuge higher then the tank then I would likely set one up as I fully believe in them...EXCEPT...EXCEPT.......
:what:
A friend of mine has a really nice one set up....full of critters yadda yadda... and recently he started getting a wack of
green algae on his back glass...every day he comes home from
work he has to scrap this THICK and VERY BRIGHT GREEN
CALLERPA COLORED ALGAE off the back glass... :what:
What , in your opinion, is happening on that? He since has
removed all calerpa etc....
I suggested to increas snails in main tank significantly...but
whyyyy is the algae happening after installing a super refugium....????? I thought the fuge is supposed to be USING
UP NUTRIENTS that cause the extra algae etc???
ANY IDEAS ANYONE?
Thanks alot! :thanks:
Nice fuge you got Muggy....it is teasing the hell out of me because I really, really want a mandarin fish and I am waiting till the
live copepods are ready at reef crew.... :)
cant wait much longer though...I ain't the most patient person hehe :)
Thanks :thanks: :mixed:

Tim, set up something small to start with. Surely you must have enough room for say a 20 gal. Even a 5 gal pail will work. I just happened to be using a 65 gal for my sump so I set up the middle section as a fuge. I have another 55 gal sitting under my main tank that I was using as my sump until I set up the 65. Once I figure out how to get the 55 out from under the stand (I messed up when building the stand and didn't leave enough space to fit the tank in so I had to set the stand down over the 55, and now I can't get it out without some serious surgery to my stand) I may also set it up as another fuge.
Not that I'm rubbing it in but I have enough pods to keep a half dozen mandarins happy and healthy...lol.

First of all...Caulerpa is NOT a good nutrient exporter. Mangroves, Chaetomorpha linum and a few others are.
Also...I would assume that due to the algael growth in the main tank...the fuge is either not large enough, the flow is too fast or it's bacause there isn't enough export occurring due to it being Caulerpa.
I have a 40Gal refugium in my set-up. I have nearly 400Gallons of actual water in my system. I only move about 400GPH through my fuge, and have it lit 24/7 with 96Watt Compact Fluorescents (x1~6500K & x1~Actinic 03). I have NO probelms with algae at all...but I also use Chaetomorpha linum as my export.
IMHO...He has something not working properly.

AJ, what is Chaetomorpha linum and where can I get some?

Contact Mitchell or afss on the forums. They run http://www.reeflexion.ca/ - and normally have it available.
It's GREAT! Doesn't root. Doesn't go sexual. ...and is highly recommended as a nutrient export by Eric Borneman (per the seminar last year @ Ryerson).
HTH...
