View Full Version : Suction cups suck! Here's a fix.

I got tired of my suction cups letting go and my heaters and phs falling down. I came up with this idea and so far it works great. I made a support out of wood which clips over the sides of the tank so it can't fall in or move. I then cut strips of acrylic and mounted the holding sleeve for the heater, suction cups removed, using a plastic tie. The acrylic strip is screwed to the wooden support using brass screws covered with a dab of silicone. Now not only will my heaters not fall, I can also place them anywhere along the support so water flows around them instead of the heater sitting against the glass using the suction cups.

I made similar holders for my phs also, minus the wood. I fastened the acrylic strips to the inside of my canopy.

The other thing you can do is if you have a heat gun, slowly heat up the acrylic and bend it to fit over the side of your tank.
Done it on a few occaisons.

I didn't have that option as my canopy sits directly on the top of the tank. I did however use that method to shape the acrylic strips to the contour of the tank and canopy so the ph sits against the glass and not way out if I had just used straight pieces.

You could also use acrylic nuts and bolts from Home Depot instead of brass screws covered with Silicone to be extra safe.

Like many DIYers I try to make do with what I have on hand at the time of my ideas. I just happened to have some brass screws leftover so I used those. This method has worked just fine for me in the past with no problems whatsoever.

Awesome idea. I've been trying to figure out the same thing.
