My (fairly) new Christmas Tree Rock. The pic doesn't do it justice. Absolutely beautiful variety of colours! Orange, green, blue, white, yellow, beige... :D

I love xmas tree rock, but I beleive that they are very difficult to keep alive for any length of time.
Do you target feed it anything?

Hi Mary
IMO, X-mas tree worm rock needs moderate water flow and moderate to high lighting (for the porites) in order to do well in addition to LOTS of phyto in the water for the worms. I bought my rock from Aaron at Seanic and it was fairly bleached like your picture shows but is now a deep brown with green highlights. I'd watch for any signs of unwanted algae growth and take measures to halt it as soon as it's noted.

Hey Scott :)
When I saw this rock (I keep calling it a rock, but I know it's actually a porites coral), I wanted it! Didn't know too much about it - just knew that I wanted it.
I asked the lfs if it would do ok in my SH tank. LFS wasn't sure whether the SHs would harm the worms or not, but showed me a piece that he kept in one of his other tanks. Said it was thriving in that tank, and this particular tank was usually kept very dim.
I know FDs are safe with SHs, so I figured these worms would be similar in that respect. I also figured that if the rock in the lfs was thriving in a dim tank, my piece would be fine in my SH tank. (Hmmm... I'm doing a lot of "figuring" here, aren't I? )
When I got home, of course I started reading up about Christmas Tree Worms. That's when I discovered that this was not a rock! It was actaully a type of coral (porites), that needed much better light than my SH tank provides to survive! (And, as you said Scott, flow). So, this rock is definitely being moved to my reef tank. Haven't had a chance to move it yet, but tonight I plan to work on my tanks. I think it'll be much better conditions for it. :)

Sorry neemo - I totally missed your question. :what:
I do not target feed. The worms are filter feeders, and believe me when I say there's lots of "stuff" in my water column! Even though I have an awesome skimmer (HSA1000), there's still a whole lotta "stuff". :wink-grin
I also feed mysis shrimp daily which I don't rinse, and there's lots of juices (from the mysis) that gets released into the water column as well. :)
BTW - thanks Mike! :D
