View Full Version : November MASD Meeting Thread

October 26th, 2008, 08:30 PM
Another meeting has come and gone, and Jeff's place will never be the same again. I WILL definately be hosting the next meeting, which will take place on November the 23rd at 1pm. If you need directions please ask myself, Jeff_K, or Ksalt . The official MASD website is forthcoming, just waiting on our fearless leader for the link.
November's meeting will involve a SHORT tank tour (it's still new) and a fragging demonstration. If you want to have any of your colonies fragged please bring them! If you aren't sure how it's donecontact me for further info. I encourage EVERY member to bring something that we can chop up and split amongst ourselves if possible. If we all bring something big enough to frag into six or seven pieces and offer them to members in good standing, everyone makes out like theives in the night :)
Right now we are looking for the following specimens to frag:
A Largeish Zoa Colony (Poukiebear?)
An easy to care for SPS (Got any Large Monti's or low light Acros Ksalt?)
I am willing to donate a white hammer for the LPS category
Does anyone have an anenome they would like to split?
Looking for a softie to frag as well (now accepting applications but anthelia/xenia is probably the easiest)
Hubert is bringing a skeleton I believe?
Jeff we will need you to bring the dremel!
Please add or confirm what you can contribute, and I look forward to having you all invade my home :)
(Jeff now you know my secret to how I do so well, that and I can't say no to Hubert!)

Unfortunatly, I can't bring the large zoa colony....unless I tear down half my tank to get the rock out.
I do have some mushrooms floating around my tank that haven't attached yet. I can bring a few of those and we can chop 'em up ! ....er, I mean, frag 'em.

i will bring alot of different skeletons so people can try to cut them without worrying about killing them :)

Look forward to see you all again. I will post a little closer to Nov. 23 meeting to let everyone what I'll be bringing for the frag demo. I should still have Gregg's(DbleG) Aussie Acans at that time :D

Mike-Oh no you won't! Those are BARRED from any fragging that goes down that day! LOL
Michelle- I was hoping to leave mushrooms for one of the newer members to bring, as they really don't have much else in their tanks at this point. Can you look around and try to find an alternative first please and thanks? I noticed you have some Xenia in your tank, is there a rock of it that could be removed?
I have a sun coral I am willing to chop up, so Jeff your dendro's are safe ;)

Unfortunatly, (again) I removed all of the xenia, and it's just starting to grow back. I've only got a few patches here and there....
lol, how about my colt coral?

Actually Jeff, that green colony we are going to split, you know the one? (not your most recent addition, the one downstairs) We could frag that one at the meeting. I've got a few Euphyllia, or my sun coral to put towards the cause but we will see what others come up with before I firm that up.
Michelle a colt coral is a great idea! You cleared out Xenia? This is the first I have heard of you clearing out anything! Way to go!
Does anyone have SPS they want to spread around the group?

Seeing as how there is a fragging demo going down here, I thought this might be relevant for those who don't yet know what we're up to

I don't exactly have anything to contribute to the frag demo-fest. But, is there anything else I can do to help out?

FJM- you are officially on the hunt for frag plugs! We will need between 30-50 ok? I might be way over in my estimate, but better to have more than we need. I will be happy if we run out with 50 of them though lol

No problem -- are there any particular preferences for the frag plugs?

Not the plastic ones, the ones that are "rock" based, or at least appear to be. Nothing sucks more than seeing a little plastic plug sitting in your rocks ;)

Sorry I haven't been online in a while i've been super busy with work... I'll start by saying thanks to Greg for the Sun Coral I makes a great addition to the tank... I really enjoyed my first MASD meeting (this is Corey for those who don't know) and I'm looking forward to the next one... During the meeting we talked about buying books for the MASD so I thought instead of buying new ones I thought that I would bring my collection of books which I will post shortly... to the meetings and if any member wants to read the book we could just have a sign out sheet and I could sign them out until the next meeting.... and i know we thought that we'd be ok with just pres, vp and treasurer ... but how about a librarian??? let me know what you think and I will post my collection of books shortly.....

Corey- yvw regarding the sun coral frag, it's nice to have something to look at before your lights get setup! Just make sure you feed every polyp 2-3x per week. It helps if you remove the coral so you don't pollute the rest of the tank water
I like the idea of the librarian, however we've already taken steps to get some club books so we will have to iron out the details on the 23rd. It would definately be helpful if you showed up with a sign out sheet for your existing library!
If anyone has purchased MACNA tickets and wants to travel as a group please let me know. If you haven't yet purchased them and still want to attend don't waste any time, tickets have already gone up in price and they will only go higher! When I purchased mine a few days ago it came to $115 each after the exchange, just as an FYI.
Ksalt- do you have an SPS you can bring to frag for the meeting?
To anyone who is planning on visiting RR in the next few days-- If you were to grab one of those favia corals to bring and frag...that would be SWEET!
FYI- Everyone who brings coral to frag, leaves with frags of as many corals as we can accomodate, Don't look at this as a donation, look at it as trading a colony for five or seven frags, depending on the turnout. Can't beat that!

DAMN, I guess I'm a little too slow with keeping up on this thread.
Gregg, I picked up those books last night for our library collection.
I sent you an e-mail....and in the e-mail I talked about a librarian and a sign out sheet, and who would take the possition. And You all beat me to it on here ! LOL
Anyways, I wouldn't mind being the librarian. (Gregg, get your mind out of the gutter, right now !) I can lugg the books back and forth to the meetings and keep track of who has what, and if need be, what book belongs to whom.
Let me know if you want me to do that.

Hey again everyone, just thought I'd post a quick update as to where we are at for "Fragfest 2008" next Sunday at my place!
As of right now here is what we've got:
Hubert- Skeletons
Michelle- Colt Coral
Mike- Acro/SPS Coral
Jeff- Dremel and our small green Acan frag (fair warning this is not for everyone but we are doing it for educational purposes)
Frank- Frag plugs
Chris- Xenia?
We still need frag glue, so if no one comes up with that by the end of this weekend I will make sure to get some and that will be my contribution. Otherwise I have either a white hammer, or my sun coral that can go on the chopping block.
Do we have any more volunteers? You've still got this weekend to go out and find something suitable. Remember, if you bring something you'll leave with a frag of what you brought, as well as the 4 or 5 other corals everyone else is bringing! Great way to jump start your collection, or to spice it up!
Chris, please get back to me to see if the Xenia is a go please and thanks.
Have a great day everyone!

November 14th, 2008, 09:57 AM
Xenia is a no go right now. Not sure if I'll be able to make it to any of my other tanks within the next week.
Shoot me a PM for your address. I won't be able to attend next weekend but will still drop off some goodies - Rock Rubble and a tube of BSI.

November 14th, 2008, 09:58 AM
Greg, I'll also bring a rock that is covered in some really cool mushrooms.
But can i make a request about this rock? It needs to be cut in half, and both halves HAVE GOT to come home with me, one for my tank, and one for another tank that has got dibs on it.

What do you need in the way of frag glue -- what and how much? Is it something special or will a common superglue do -- (superglue is what I've read about. . . )? If it is just superglue, I can pick some up over the week.

This sounds like fun, but my wife laughs at me.
What time is the event?
If i can make it what do you want me to bring to frag? I do not have anything very interesting in the tank i am willing to part with at this time, BUT I am willing to buy something new and hack it up to share. Tell me what you want (send link to a photo) and how big. I will zip into NAFB's on Thurs. night and pick one up if they have one. Other suggestions as to where to go will be gleefully accepted.

John, the laughing will turn ahhh, once she see the beautiful frags you'll be bringing back to your tank, lol.:pompom: I'll have to check or DbleG will ring in; I believe it is at 1 pm next Sunday. DbleG or Jeff_k will most likely be emailing everyone as a reminder sometime this week. Chris (motopsycho) has offered to set us up with a few tubes of glue, but if frank can swing by and grab a few as well that would be awesome. anyone who brings extra, i will be glad to buy a few tubes off if we have leftovers.
John- if you are interested in going to NAFB and picking up a Zoa colony that would be ideal as we dont have one to frag yet. Doesn't have to be a monster colony, but most of us would appreciate if you didn't get a green colony either ;) If you look closely at John's Zoa tanks, there is a purplish bullseye type of zoa with WHITE tips. When I was there last there was three colonies of it, and that would be PERFECT. Quite rare and I'm surprised they weren't scooped up right away. Again though so long as it isn't a greenish colony you can't go wrong ;)
I also plan on heading down to NAFB Thursday evening to ask John if he is willing to donate something to the cause for us as well. Does anyone need anything while I am there?

Rarity has nothing to do with scoop up or not. I am still struggling with what to do with the Grandis paly that Jeff said is rare ..... looks brown and purple to me and expensive for just a few polyps :)
I will bring Epoxy on behalf of ReefAquatica.com if we do not have that.

Everyone will get an email this week from either Jeff, Mike or myself with directions to my place for the meeting, which is this Sunday at 1pm. If you don't have Jeff, Mike's or my email and WANT to come please PM me with your email addy.
Rarity isn't always an issue I agree with you there Hubert, but how often do you see attractive purple bullseye zoas with white tips NOT get scooped up? Hope someone gets to them before long! Someone who wants me to get a frag of them anyways! lol

Just found out about this from jeff_k
Do you allow guests? I am still new to the hobby and as yet don't have anything to frag but need to learn as I am personally terrified to cut into my corals right now and damage them. I can offer what I have accumulated so far in my fragging kit as my contribution (Rotary Cutter with about every bit you could want, handheld cutters, handheld hacksaw, epoxy and a couple of small glue tubes as well as nitrile gloves). Only other thing I could offer is to stop off on the way and grab some Timmies donuts and coffee.
Thanks.
p.s. would also actually like to meet with the owners of BWI and Reef Aquatica as I have been chatting with them about work and frags for the tank.

I can pretty much guarantee the meeting will be over by 3pm, as I work sunday evening and will need to sleep! Corey, you are welcome to come by beforehand and drop off the books and signout sheet.
Priority goes to those who have brought corals to frag, however you are more than welcome to purchase what is left if you aren't able to bring anything to frag. I am certain that some members would be willing to part with a few of the frags they recieve as well, so don't feel pressured to bring anything other than a little cash if you want something.
We do allow guests, however we do not allow members who have not paid their dues to leave with articles such as books, or other club items that show up in the future so please keep this in mind. If you have already been to at least one meeting we will be asking for dues to help fund our future projects as a group, so please be prepared to support us, as we will be more than willing to support you.
Look forward to seeing everyone this weekend, get excited people! Tyler, can you get to NAFB and get those Zoas I was going on about a few posts up?

Now you'll never see me in it ! You snooze, you loose. LOL Sorry boys !
Geeze - I should check this thread more often. I missed out on the Mike Paletta book (dibs after Mike`s done with it!)
Also, I didn`t realize there was a MASD librarian outfit...wouldn`t that mean Michelle`s wearing....ohhhhhhhhh....I get it now.

I picked up a zoa tonight. It's not purple with white tips, gust green. Looks likt there are several types on the same rock.
Will post PIX tomorrow when its open.

Hey guys I hope you all had a good time at my place today! Mike, glad you enjoy the tubastrea! Also glad the Wife has a new coral to make her happy with as well!
Sorry my place was a little cramped, but we seemed to make do and in a pinch we can do it again if need be. Thanks again to Chris for the freebies, to everyone who brought frags and equipment, and to those who didn't and came out and supported our club with some cash! Also thanks to TML rocks for dropping off the library, and Miss Poukibear and George for bringing books and TONS of things to cut up!
Also thank you all very much for the kinds remarks about my new setup, especially the hints about the Hillae Jeff ;) We should get more colonies of that stuff!
P.S. Thanks to the snack bringers even though we didn't seem to need them!

Too Funny! I just finished reading up on the 20,000 gallon DREAM. Found myself soaked in droll, the book also as I finished my dream of the next great build. Thanks Corey! Let me know about the outfit; I might have to miss the next meeting if thats the case lol

Oh, haven't you heard? The Librarian possotion comes with a madatory Librarian outfit.
It consists of a teeny white blouse, tied up in a knot above your belly botton, plaid pants, or preferably a skirt, hair tied up in a bun, and mature looking spectacles. Oh, and don't forget the high heels.
For some reason (which I've decided that I don't want to know) All the guys voted for you to be the librarian instead of me... So either you're one sexy dude, or I'm just not that appealing in a short skirt. LOL

Glad to have helped local enthusiasts. I'm sure you'll like the rock, it covers over with coraline pretty quickly. Hopefully next meeting I'll be able to come out and participate. I am just super busy right now; 2 jobs @ 40hr each and then spending time with my family, things are organized chaos right now. :D

Thanks for the enjoyable afternoon there guys and gals. Was nice to put faces to the names of people that post here. I am not sure what it was about my bags but I got another leaker on the way home... I was dripping water all the way back home to Toronto... :lol2: However they all made it back with enough water still in their bags and were acclimted, dipped and placed in the tank last night. Unfortunately (fortunately :woohoo:) I am now going to have to move some stuff around the tank and also cut off the frags I had from before off there plugs now. Lets see what sort of fun I can have on my day off.

I have no shame i'd do just about anything for a laugh but I don't think anyone is going to show with me dressed up as a fruity librarian...
