I have a 20G that is almost a Nano, I have most of the parts including a skimmer so I feel that I should be able to keep almost anything in there. However I would like some input on lighting. I want to go to excess as that's how I am and I want to keep corals and maybe one or two fish. Any recommendations? :thanks:

PowerCompacts..

MH might be too much for a small system like that. If you can cool the efficiently, then MH would deffinetly be excess..

If I don't need MH then I won't get MH but I want to make sure that I have enough light for whatever I may want to put into the tank. I don't want to spend money foolishly :wink-grin although I think that I already have.

Power compats is what I would use!
I had a 20gallon reef with bunch of corals, Damsel, Moroun clown, 6line wrasse and banded coral shrimp...
Everything did quite well. Use 1 10,000k Daylight and 1 Actinic. It will look crystal clear! Unlike 50/50 PC bulbs wich are a little dull and kinda yellow. (Not nearly as bad as incan. though)

So thats that. 1 act. 1 daylight. PC's

If the length of your tank is not smaller than 24" They have a
24" 2x75Watt VHO retrofit kit for US$95 or 4x75W for $165. in my opinion 150W will be good enough for a 20G nano you will have 7.5W/gallon and the price is very good.

Good luck with your nano

If it were me, i'd throw a 150W 50,000K Iwasaki on it or a 175w of your choice (or a 150 DE pendant).

I have a 24g nano too, I agree with Scott to go with Mh, but the 150 watts of PC lighting isnt a bad way to gp either.

Soooo, that means Is will have NO money left over. Well if that is what it takes then I guess that I will have to do it. Any other opinions???

So, If i have a 75W Actinic bulb and a 175W MH bulb, would that be ok? Remembering that I don't want to have to change it in a month because it's not enough. :P

I think it depends on the types of corals you want to keep. While many people reccomend MH lighting especially for SPSs such as acro the guys propagating these colorful acros strongly reccomend VHO bulbs. They always say that they get the best acropora growth and colors under VHO lighting. Most of their tanks have around 11W/gallon VHO. It may be because of my ignorance but i haven't seen this much colorful acros and SPSs in many tanks having MH lighting. Here are the results i don't know what you will think
