DIY Hood?

I am about to build a wooden hood for my 40 Gallon. I am going to use pine. Is it a good choice? I am going to put 4X36" VHO retrofit in it. What should be the height of hood and what is the appropriate space between the VHO bulbs and water surface? the length of tank is 36 2/8" i am planning to leave 1/8'' space on each side so the total length of front side of the hood is going to be 36 4/8''. Will it be enough?

I have a 65g tank so I am running 48" VHO bulbs.

With German end-caps the total length is 48 5/8 and that was really sqeezing the lights into the hood.
