OK, Dumass question. When people talk about really well planted freashwater tanks, what are the plants planted in?
Do they just sit in the rocks or what. I always had fake plants but now want some real ones and my LSP is full of dummies just like me. :thanks:

Often the plants are rooted in a grainy sandbed. It's between gravel and sand, Usually brown. If your sand is 3 inches deep or so, you can dig them in deep where they will stay better.
A friend of mine has a planted aquarium, but other people on the board might give you better info.
You could just stick them in wahtever gravel you have too. but I dont think thats optimal for them.

im a FW plant freak.
they plants are planted into the gravel as real plants have roots.
some plants such as java fern and anubias have roots that will grow around an object such as driftwood and rocks. It takes a while for them to grow on. most plants can be planted into the gravel.

Hey,
I made a mix of garden soil, sand, peat, potting soil, and laterite. Toped this off with some gravel.. seems to have worked well. Been set up like this for 3 years now. It does stink when i empty to move it, but all in all it works great IMO
BTW please try to post FW questions in the FW forums.
Thanks
Scott
