i haven't bought a new computer in more than 4 years, i've just slowly been upgrading my current one but i think it's time for a new one
i was looking at this one that's on sale until tmw
any good? pros or cons? to be honest i am computer illiterate, and i will mainly use the computer for some minor gaming, web surfing and movie watching
thanks in advance

Anyways, this is a bit lacking imo but it also comes down to budget. Computers are forever changing and of you want this to last for the next four years you're going to need to get some specs. Just to give you a reference I upgrade every six months to keep with the current technology.
Chances are in a few years everything will move to 64 bit. I have a feeling that this is 64 bit ready but will it be able to give the real benifit of 64 bit systems. Maximum RAM is another biggie, this is something that you need to get into the motherboard specs about. Don't worry about how many memory slots it has, you can always have two 4G sticks.
The network is a bit outdated. Not really a biggie atm as your internet will only be ~16Mb/s max in todays world but the standard for networks is now 1Gb/s. If you only have one computer in the house this might not seem like a big deal but once you start using the Windows Media Centre functions be it via XBOX 360, HTPC, or a medic centre receiver the extra bandwidth come in handy.
The graphics card leaves something to be desired but for a good graphics card you could spend as much as you would for this whole unit.
All in all I'd say it's not a 'bad' system but more specs would be needed to be sure if it's worth the investment.

thanks for the info, i was thinking of getting a custom setup built but i guess like reefing, i've got to do my research
any recommendations on mobo/processor combos that won't break the bank?
as for the video card, i'm not too concerned if it's not the latest and greatest i already have a 360 and soon to have a wii

if it means anything here are my current computer specs which was a custom built
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53GHZ on an Asus mobo (forgot which one)
512RAM
Nvidia Gforce4 MX 440 video card
SiS 900-based PCI based fast internet adapter
SB Live 5.1 sound card
Windows XP pro which i would want to keep as my OS but am also thinking of Windows XP Media Center, definately not Vista
it does what i need it to do but when running multiple programs such as watching video's and downloading the sytem lags quite a bit

Here's something quick I threw together and what you should be able to get it for;
- Asus P5K-E ~ $180
(same as the P5K-3 (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3109410&CatId=3355) but with only one LAN)
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor ~ $180
(http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3241551&Sku=CP1-DUO-E6750)
- 2G's RAM ~$80
- 550W Power Supply (your old one won't power the new boards) ~$40
- GeCube Radeon HD 3870 Video Card ~$300
(Not the best but not bad and you can run Crossfire in the future http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3522895&CatId=2349)
Total = $780
You should be able to reuse your case and if you decide on a cheaper video card be sure it is min 512DDR4 RAM

Mac's are very over rated, and easily hackable but I guess to each their own. They are a good all around but fail to shine in any one way. My mother in law bought one thinking they were immune to hackers so I hacked hers with a PDA. Maybe one day they will be the norm but atm they are too overpriced for what you really get.

thanks for the tip, did some research on the board and processor and it sounds like a good combo, however the video card seems a bit overboard, i didn't know what crossfire was but with some research, found it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_CrossFire
is this type of board really necessary for my type of usage? would something like this be more sufficient? http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26983&affiliateid=5887734
another question, i have 2 HD 's at the moment, 500g seagate, 300g seagate and they are both IDE not Sata, would i be able to use these or do i have to buy SATA drives? can i use the same video card i have right now for the surround sound or is another one also needed?
thanks for all your help nano!

The motherboard will support two EIDE drives but if you upgrade your OS you should set up a RAID set. ATM though it will handle your current harddrives with giving you room to grow.
When you go shopping for a PSU (power supply unit) be sure to get one that has SATA power connectors. You can get adaptors but why not do it right the first time.
This motherboard has 7.1 surround sound and both digital and optical output. You won't need a sound card with this combo and I doubt you're running HDMI but rather DVI for your monitor so the video card's sound isn't going to be an issue.
The video card should work fine but the clock speed is a bit slower. I don't think you'll really notice a difference though. Here's a review on this card;

well i'm sold on the motherboard and processor combo, specially after watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypJ9fL6hoF4. I found the mobo for $159 tax in with factory warranty from a local computer store, i'm still price comparing the processor and video card to see what prices i can get them for
another question i found this for $70, would this be better?

Fail to shine in any one way?
Easily hackable?
Please explain exactly what you mean by "hacked" with your PDA. I'm very curious. Did you connect to her wireless network?.. or root her mac? Were you able to get a rootkit running on her mac with your PDA? Is her mac a zombie on your l337 DoS grid?
Buffer overflow?
Also, I noticed you're recommending a raid setup for someone who said their primary use for a computer is web surfing, light gaming and watching movies? I think that video card is overboard too, specially for someone who has an xbox 360, what's the point?
My radeon 9000 still plays warcraft III just fine :D
Oh, and my macbook pro runs windows better than my PC at home. And yeah, I've been building them for nearly ten years now (PCs).
Macbook Pro - best computer I have ever owned, hands down. I work with laptops for a living, many PCs I might add, and this is easily the best. Maybe that's because I like OS X, but I'm not one of those people that prefers one over the other. I use windows with as much zeal. Two computers in one.
But yeah, aside from the video card recommendation and RAID I think the setup is just right. Personally, I would save money on the video card and buy a nice silent Antec case.

I think cases are the most overlooked aspect of a system build. A quiet case is priceless IMO. And for people like me, being able to work inside of it with ease is a great bonus too.
edit: grrrr
why does this site break links like that? And why does every link have to open in an AP frame? I have to click a link two times to visit a site from here, the frame thing is really aggravating and it's something unique to AP, other sites don't 'trap' you like that.

I've gone over this in various threads here and elsewhere but my 'dislike' (for lack of a more appropriate postable word) of the MAC's and how overrated they are has gotten me in trouble here so I don't wish to discuss their many, many faults. Just Google hack mac and I'm sure there will be a few interesting tidbits that will come up including one quote about how the first person to hack a MAC called Windows PC's a safer and more secure unit (which I was also forced to remove from my signature, or should I say removed for me).
I'm sure I will receive enough flack for my post so please, I don't wish to discuss their faults further. So lets stay on topic.
I did suggest a RAID for a future OS upgrade, not right away. Please re read what I posted. My suggestions are not just for the current but also the future and seeing how he isn't getting the full benefit of owning a XBOX 360 and wouldn't be getting the full speed of the hardware he will own seems kinda pointless to set it up otherwise. Why wouldn't you want the most out of your hardware and set it up right the first time so it can grow with you?
It breaks because it's has a server request in it. I take it you just build computers and have no programming background? The .php and .asp are dead give aways that they are going to send a request to the server displaying the page and because there is a frame the request is sent to the AP server as it is the one displaying the page. Personally I agree and prefer a redirect page (ie, you are now leaving Aquariumpros) but Aj wants the current setup so this is how it is. You could always talk to him directly about it.

I understand how server side applications work, doesn't mean that AP doesn't break those links. I don't build computers for a living though I do work for an IT department.
Also, MAC is a hardware address that uniquely identifies a network interface as I'm sure you know. Then there are macs ;)
It's not my place to tell AJ how to run his site, I was just griping.
Anyway, I understand what you're saying about future proofing. I think 64 bit will be the norm eventually, it has to be. But, i think that right now 64 bit is a pain in the butt. Aside from that I stand by the case recommendation as it will be one that lasts a while. I'm still running on my old Antec soho case.
And yeah, everyone is a computer expert these days, whether they code or not.
I don't know why you would bring up 'hacking' your mom's apple and then say you don't want to talk about it on this forum? I'm not offended, far from. I'm not one of those zealots or fanboys. I'm genuinely curious about what you meant. I googled but I can't find what you're talking about quickly enough and I'm lazy :)

Actually we're both wrong, it is Mac :lolol:
I'm just so used to hitting shift when I type mac that it's a habit lol.
I'm just against any direct praise about Mac's without pointing their faults. Every system has a weakness, or many, and people tend to overextend their praise without either realizing or accepting this.
Perhaps 'hack mac' would be a better key phrase. Here's a article about how remote root access was obtained through the wireless drivers in ~60 seconds, link (http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2006/08/03/hack-a-mac-in-60-seconds).
Here's a link (http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Mac-OS-X-hacked-under-30-minutes/0,130061744,139241748,00.htm) where a Mac was hacked in under 30min and I love the quote which is so true and left Apple speechless; "The only thing which has kept Mac OS X relatively safe up until now is the fact that the market share is significantly lower than that of Microsoft Windows or the more common UNIX platforms.… If this situation was to change, in my opinion, things could be a lot worse on Mac OS X than they currently are on other operating systems"
Here's another $10 000 winner for hacking a Mac, link (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2007/04/21/mac-hacked-for-10000)
Here's another link (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9018138) which points out that Vista is more secure than OSX, and I love this quote; "I have found the code quality, at least in terms of security, to be much better overall in Vista than Mac OS X..."
There are a few very pro Apple people on here that I've made a point of 'correcting' them and as such have received some huge flack. I feel a recourse coming but I only wanted to point out that they are flawed yet not the core subject of this thread.

Fair enough!
I'm not a typical Mac user :)
Not a fanboy on either side of the fence, not a hater either.
I just use computers, they are part of life. I figure I'm "multilingual", put a linux box in front of me, a windows box or a Mac and equally comfortable on all. That's the way I like it.
And yeah, for sure, every platform has it's pros and cons, nothing is perfect, life isn't perfect :)
But yeah, the Macbook Pro is a great computer, for me. I love that I can run OS X and Windows on it, I love that it's nice to look at and I love the keyboard :)
I like fast wake ups from sleep, I like expose and quartz more than I like Aero!
Anyway, peace out.

To be honest the case is often overlooked but so is the CPU cooler and expandability of the case. Don't get a case that has a tunnel ram for the CPU cooler. They tend to only work if they are stock CPU coolers and IMO anything stock is too loud. Detachable faceplate with a filter is an option that isn't around too often but it helps keep dust out and IMO a good find.
You'll also want to keep the computer case cool so bigger front and rear fans, with more being better, will help you get this result. The amount of airflow you'll need really depends on your ambient temp but IME overkill is better than a error in calculations. Look for at least a dual 120mm case.
Also, you'll need to think about how many bays you'll need. If you have two DVD's plus a floppy then getting a case that only exposes one DVD dive may become a PITA real quick. You may also want to give some thought to the location of the tower and if you use the front I/O ports. If you use a thumb drive a lot and place the tower on the floor (which is a no no, it should be in a stand) then reaching down to 'guess' where the port is may become aggravating.
Personally I like open/glass sides but alot of the look is personal taste.
As for XP vs Vista, IMO unless you upgrade to Ultimate it's not worth it. There are some security features and programs in Ultimate that is missing in the lower versions. Vista has some advantages over XP with grater product support, and the soon to come lack of support from Microsoft for XP. Products have generally converted to Vista ready and if you're going to run more than 2G's of RAM I suggest a 64bit system.
I run 64bit Vista Ultimate and have yet to come across a driver issue. The key IME is to buy core components and not clones or knock off's.

so i was hesitant about spending $550 on a new computer and i end up spending $970 and counting, i figured my current computer with minor upgrades is 7 years old the only thing that was changed was the CPU and memory 4 years ago!!! i bought the computer 2nd year university, i'm sure this will be my last upgrade for probably just as long and it still gives me the ability to change components without any problems in the future
i'll be running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit which i haven't gotten yet so i'm thinking this is a pretty nice machine even if i want an alternative to my xbox

Have you bought the RAM yet? The board will handle 8G's so 2 2G sticks will save you if you decide to max it out ( I tend to with every MB I get). The speed is a bit low as well, the board handles 1066MHz RAM (if tuned by the MB). There is also a WiFi edition that has wireless built in that usually only runs for about $10 more. Might be something to look into if you haven't already purchased it.

Seems everywhere that I can think of that'd have a site link (ie doesn't go by true market value) is pushing the 1G versions. There is 2G (and 4G or more) sticks out but it would seem you need a real computer shop to get them for you.

ok well i had enough waiting to get a deal on the video card and ordered my HD3870 video card yesterday and i should have it by tomorrow.that's the last component for my computer. i also changed my ram i'll be using the 4gig Adata kit which i've read really good reviews about it and they're cheaper to boot $90 for 4g's
now im still a little leary about upgrading to vista, more specifically the 64bit version due to possible system limitations
i'm hoping nano and monti can help me out here as you both use the 64bit ultimate version right now. have you guys had any issues with incompatible drivers or issues with 3rd party apps?
i just read this article which is a little outdated but had a good comparison between the differences between 32bit and 64bit OS
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_ff_x64.asp
here's a list of some programs that i like using and would not like to lose
Audacity - creating ringtones for my cell phones
Azureus - torrents
BS player - video player that allows for subtitles
convertxtodvd - burn .avi to very good quality dvd's
limewire
VLC - video player
Winrar archives
Clone DVD
PSP Video 9 - reformat movies so i can watch them on my PSP and ipod/iphone
itunes
thanks in advance

The ONLY issue that I have running 64bit Vista is that those :tape: over at Adobe can't get their :tape: together and finally release their 64bit version of flash for. Vista 64bit has a 32bit version if IE which flash works fine on and Fx runs just as well as a 32bit system but neither run as fast as IE 64bit, which makes this a shame
Just reading upgrade I should point out that you cannot upgrade a 32bit XP to a 64bit Vista. It has to be a 64bit to a 64bit or a fresh install. If you're going to upgrade the OS you currently have and it's 32bit you'll need a full version to go 64bit, and even then the ultimate is the only one worth getting.
µTorrent has less crashes and an easier GUI, may be worth the switch.
Limewire needs to die, it's a 'hack me' sign.
Ditch the PSP Video 9 and get Fox PSP Video converter, a much better proggy. You can also get the Fox Video converter and convert anything to anything.
Also look into virtualdub (http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/). This proggy will allow you to combine two AVI's into one.
Ditch the BS Player and either run Nero or better yet just install the K-Lite Codec pack (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm) and you can run the video's (including AVI's) on windows media player.

I had a compatibility issue with my Adobe as well. Vista would not take my old program. In the final analyse, I only used it to read Adobe files and to convert word docs into pdf's. so I tossed out my Adobe Pro and loaded the free Adobe reader and a copy of Cutepdf. After that, Adobe can smooch my fuzzy peach.
I did have to upgrade a lot of drivers when I first installed Vista. My video, audio and printers all needed online support for a few days till I got it set up properly.
Sorry, can't say much about the compatibility of your programs, I don't use them. but as I recall, there is an online vista preparedness program somewhere that will tell you what your system needs or loses when vista goes in.
Of course you need an OS online to get it...

IME the driver issue was really with old hardware. New hardware already has the updated versions so there shouldn't be a problem building a rig at this point. As for the printer and what not that may be a different story. The printer will still work but some features such as OCR may not. If you're just using it as a printer/scanner/whatever and not getting fancy than the native Vista drivers will work.
Some have told me that they have noticed a better print quality but that may just be in their head. You can always go to the manufacturer's download section and see if they have vista drivers. If they do then when Vista installs it should find them.
Alot of the problems that people have heard is with the first release but they have been patched for the most part. We're also running Vista SP1 so any old posts will be very much out of date.

So? How did you make out?
got some time to put the computer together, was a little hesistant about using 2x2gb sticks since it wasn't on the motherboard's QVL list but after talking to the guys at the computer shop i ended up using it and it is working with no issues
i'm having problem updating the bios since for some reason the asus update via internet option doesn't seem to be working
Vista 64 ultimate installed and works like a charm no issues whatsoever, i beleive it installed 74 updates which took quite a while so i left it running
i got a 5.1 on the Vista performance index which i guess is ok, everything was 5.9 except for the memory for some reason but the video card/processor/mobo received great marks
still deciding on what antivirus software to use so i haven't done much internet surfing/downloading except for the updates and such
the only other issue i'm having right now is to get the case fans to work which concerns me a little since the mobo only has 1 4 pin outlet for the CPU fan and when i install the 2 case fans and the CPU none of them works at full speed. i'm still working it out
thanks to the both of you for all the help

Open your manual and look at page 2-3 (2.2.3 pic) there is one CPU fan, one rear case fan, and three front case fans. You can have a CPU and four fans installed on their own connection and all are BOIS monitored for speed.
edit, forgot the link;
http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments/technicaldocuments_content.aspx?no=714
The update program that came with the MB is more than likely outdated.
As for AV's Bitdefender has intergeneration into Vista 64bit. There are a few other good AV's as well but the GUI on Bitdefender is generally easier for most users.

yeah the 4 case fan connections are 3 pin and my fans are of the 4 pin variety which is PWM compliant which the motherboard supports
here's the FAQ http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K-E/WiFi-AP
i think i will be able to resolve this problem when i'm able to update the motherboard. i'm just going to download it to a bootable usb and do it that way rather than online. this might solve the issue
for the virus i was leaning towards Symantec since i get it free through work but i'll look into bitdefender

Ummm... symantec (or anything from bell for that matter) will make your system crawl. They take up way to many cycles and miss most stuff.
BTW one of my rigs has the same board ;) I'm running Arctic Cooling (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/fans2.php?idx=111) case fans just because of their rubber posts (no vibration transfer), but only have three pins.

yeah, that's the only mobo pin that will allow pwm that's why my case fans have to be run parallel with the cpu fan

it's true symantec did slow down my old computer quite a bit the rtvscan takes up a chunk of the ram at all times, good point, i'll definately look at the bitdefender
you probably have the arctic cooling 12L model fans http://www.arctic-cooling.com/fans2.php?idx=101
which only come with the 3 pin connector for the mob because they are not PWM capable, i have these arctic cooling 12PWM which comes with the 3 pin for mobo controllability AND the 4 pin connector for PWM capability

I've placed the 4 pin on a three before, think I jumped it though... can't remember. You shouldn't use the CPU port for both fans, and it kinda defeats the whole PWM bit altogether. You could also slow down the CPU cooler (which I hope isn't stock, loud as hell) and fry the chip, or the rail. Remember there's a reason for PWM in the first place ;)
Actually my 12 model isn't listed... huh.

Finally got it to work! Uploaded the new bios and installed now the motherboard's Qfan chassis function works-I am able to monitor the CPU fan and the 2 fans currently the are running and fully functioning i am using the Asus probe program to monitor CPU and mobo temps along with the CPU fan and 2case fan rpms. These fans are nice and quiet which are nice at this time I'm still using the stock Cpu fan I'll be picking up freezer pro 7 sometime next week
These fans shouldn't affect the CPU fan because the 4 pin connector that attaches to the CPU fan is probably only for the power they come with both the 3 & 4 pin connectors the 3 pin are connected to the mobo's case fan inputs

well it seems that Bitdefender is reasonably priced for a 3computer/2yr subscription but reviews are saying that it is also a resource hog just like symantec, although their scan and protection are very, very good. there seems to be a compatibility issue with vista also which i would like to avoid
i've been doing alot of reading on the nod32 and kaspersky and am leaning towards kaspersky
any of you guys have any experience with these 2? i was thinking of downloading the trial but i hate adding/removing programs

I also have a rig with Vista Premium 64Bit with Kaspersky but it misses many port scans and isn't integrated like Bitdefender is. It also doesn't have as good of a positive or as few false positives as Bitdefender.
NOD32 doesn't cover P2P or a few other things that may be of interest, especially updates!

i double checked the dates on the reports i read and they were early 2007 before the bitdefender compatibility update came out so that's probably why there are no longer any issues
very good point on the p2p and open ports since i do use torrents and may still be using limewire. i knew nod32 didn't have it that's why i was leaning towards kaspersky
i use antivir on my wife's laptop and symantec on my old computer
have you seen this report? this is one of the main reasons why i was hesitant about bitdefender, it's performance seemed to be a little average to me, and it had higher false positives than kaspersky and nod 32

LoL, na you'll want to disable that. Running two firewalls 'can' be an issue with some programs but if you get bitdefender internet security 2008 (http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-2195-en--BitDefender-Internet-Security-2008.html) it'll have a firewall for you. Your router should also have a firewall and to be honest having a hardware firewall and the AV firewall you should be golden.
I've seen that 'report' before, very outdated. Heck they're using XP and last years AV engine, but even still Bitdefender has almost twice the virus record list.

I've read it and it doesn't surprise me at all. Vista is getting old (for OS's) but I'd wait and see if it actually comes through on that time frame.

Ummm... symantec (or anything from bell for that matter) will make your system crawl. They take up way to many cycles and miss most stuff.
BTW one of my rigs has the same board ;) I'm running Arctic Cooling (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/fans2.php?idx=111) case fans just because of their rubber posts (no vibration transfer), but only have three pins.
did you have any problems running wifi solo ap? i can't seem to get the wifi working, i installed the program from the mobo disc and in my networks screen it has a very weak signal and neither my iphone or my wife's laptop can find the connection
ive contacted asus about it and received a case # since the rep who was helping me wasn't too familiar with the board, the fact that he told me that the wifi function of the board is to receive signals and not to actually broadcast wifi leaves me a little skeptical of their assistance at this point

Are you running the wifi in station mode or in access point mode? Station mode will allow you to use the boards wifi to connect to a wifi access point where as in access point mode you are using the boards wifi to share its internet connection (ICS). Don't forget that you need to enable the program when you boot up (task bar, windows blocks some programs upon startup).

Access point, my computer is hardwired to my modem, i currently have bell hi speed.
yeah, everytime i start windows it asks me to enable asus wtlan or something or other which i do, the laptop and the iphone pick up the connection and it accepts the password but for some reason whenever i try to access the net it can't find the host

Do they connect at all (you'd see the MAC pop up in the AP manager)? Does the time on the motherboard reset itself? Have you set the key and SSID? It's more than likely in the settings, I just tried it out on a remote computer and no issues here.

Almost forgot, do you have a wifi router? If you try to connect to the router AP and can't there could be an issue with the hardware.
my networks screen it has a very weak signal
I don't mean to question you but this makes me think you may have it in station mode as that's the only way you'd see a signal in network and sharing centre.

no it's in access point mode, there is an option to switch it to station mode on AP solo but i haven't initiated that

Ok then if it's not hardware then more than likely it's a key issue. If you scan for your ASUS AP and can see it you should also notice on the ASUS AP screen that a device has connected, or atleast it'll show you the MAC as it tries to connect. If you're not seeing the MAC pop up then there is a chance that you're not connecting to that AP but rather someone else's. Renaming the AP to something odd will ensure that you're getting yours and not someone else with the same name.
If you really are trying to connect to just your AP then there is a chance that you have the wrong SSID in the device trying to connect. Even with the wrong key if the SSID is right you'll still see the MAC as the two communicate and exchange key info.

i've got a pretty unique name
the setup is as follows
Profile Name:Access Point Mode
Network Name (SSID) Mark_PC_Wifi
Infrastructure (this is highlighted)
Channel---AUTO
Network authentification: Shared Key
Data encryption:WEP
ASCII
Key Length: 128bit
Key Index 1
i can't figure it out i have quadrupled check to make sure that i'm inputting the right Network key which is the password
The network monitor shows the connection
AID:1
MAC Address: 00:1E:C2:CC:4B:E2
Lifetime:19:51
i'm at a loss here and asus hasn't contacted me yet :(
neither the laptop or the iphone can connect. i was using the wifi at work with my iphone today with no issues so it's not the iphone or the laptop, and i can connect to my regular bell wifi

i think i found a possible issue, just for kicks i pressed the ICS button to connect and a windows pop up window appeared
WINDOWS HAS DETECTED AN IP ADDRESS CONFLICT
it appears that another computer is using the same IP address as this one
how would i resolve that?
