From what I have learned and it makes sense if you think about it. A hospital or quarantine tank will allow you to remove a potentially sick fish and evaluate and if needed medicate him/her with less medicine than needed in your main take before the disease has a chance to spread to your entire population. Also some medicines can be hard on certain species that are in the main population and you would risk causing uneccessary stress to those fish. You also risk damaging your estiblished bio-filter in your main tank with certain medicines. Hope this helps.

On top of what philster stated!

Its almost in possible to catch fish who has decided that he will not come peacefully! Not to mention some times we buy from certain LFS who do not Acclimate correctly, so by housing them in the QT tanks for a couple of weeks before introducing to the main tank or at least in the Refugium if something where to happen to the fish, you are not tearing down the established tank to remove the dead fish!

But ideally you want to setup a tank same parameters as the main tank to house and treat ill fish!
