Hey Mike I get mine off of Ray..He gives me enough of the calcium and mag to make four 2 liter bottles of each which lasts a long time...he charges no more than what it costs him which 2-3 weeks ago was $17...very fair and I am sure he would do it for you also...just pm him and he will get back to you to set up a time to go to his place...I bring 4 jars with tops and he measures it out precisely and you are on your way...need more info just get back to me...Dave

Hey Dave, When Ray fills up your jars is everything pre mixed and ready to dose? How long does it usually last you? Thanks for the input. P.s. trumpet/candy coral is doing great! Mike.

Mike once Ray gives it to you I put two 2 liter bottles of RO/DI water in a bucket with a powerhead and put enough of either the calcium or mag in and mix it ..I then funnel it into the 2 liter bottles and voila all ready to go ...Use baking soda for the alk and do the same thing...I make enough to fill two 2 liter bottles and it lasts me about4-6 weeks dosing 60 ml of each per day...You have to find how much you need for your tank to keep your levels at where you want them...I believe the recipe is 5 cups of calcium makes two 2 liter bottles..just follow Randy Farley's recipe...I have been doing this for a year or two...Glad the candycane is doing well..if need anything else just pm or email me...Dave

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate your help. I was able to find some dowflake at a TSC store today. I'm sure it's the older kind with low bromine. looking forward to mixing a batch. I'll keep you posted with my progress.:bounce1: Mike.

Dave, TSC has the old Dowflake in stock. I bought my last bag at the new east end store, but I would imagine they have it at the hyde park store as well.
Needs to be kept sealed and if memory serves, the I.O. pail (200g size) holds most of the bag.
For the amount you guys use, share the cost of a bag and you won't have to store as much.
Even for the amounts I use, a bag lasts a long time.

FWIW, I bottle my mixes in 2 liter bottles, and make each of the 3 parts to be dosed equally, calcium, baked baking soda, and magnesium supplement.
In other words, I dose 1 part of calcium, 1 part of baked baking soda, and 1 part of magnesium supplement each time I dose.
For each part I make up 2 liter bottles.
250 gms of calcium chloride in the first bottle
297 gms of baked baking soda in the second bottle
50 gms of magnesium sulphate (epsom), and 84 gms of magnesium chloride hexahydrate in the third bottle.

Hey Ray, The mag chloride hexahydrate- is this the "mag pellets" that is commonly sold under the brand "dead sea works"? If so, where do you get yours from, univar? If this is the case, would you be willing to sell-supply me with some, considering I would just need a small amount.:D

I could spare enough for a couple of 2 liter bottles as I'm quite low at the moment and don't know when I'll have enough dinero to place my next order with Univar.
Univar now places a $25 handling charge on each order under $500 and there is no way I'd be buying that much.
I'm looking for another supplier but at the moment it hasn't proved fruitful.
My magchlorhex is Dead Sea Works but in flake form not pellets.
You can e-mail me if you want some. (don't like pm's)

Well, I just found out that Univar has moved everything to Toronto and now ships everything from there. They won't ship orders under $500 so that's out now.
I have a bag ordered from Anchem in London so I'll see how that works out.

Hey Ray, I just found a place that sells "mag flakes" by DSW's, goes for $30.00 for a 50 lb. bag.

Hopefully the bag I ordered will be slightly less as I was quoted 98 cents per kilo which should work out to $24.50. However, I neglected to ask if there was a handling charge for small orders.
Where did you source yours from?

From a tack store called "country depot" in Mitchell, between Seaforth and Stratford on Highway 8. They are basically a mini TSC store pretty much catering to the farmers within the region.

The Country Depot in Strathroy is where I buy my calcium hydroxide (kalk) for calcium replacement.
I only use the Randy Formula for when I have tank sitters as I won't let sittlers dose such a high pH additive as kalk.
