Did some fidling with my camera, and managed to splice together the attached image to show the difference between male carrying eggs and the female. (note the extended mouth of the male (on Right))

Awesome comparison shot Mark!!! Have you successfully bred baby bangaiis yet? Or is this your first try?

Nice pic Mark. Here are my 3 when younger. My male is also holding young. Like yours he hung close to his mate, but has since moved off on his own. The 3rd bangaii has now moved in on his mate, while he is gone.

When I had a pair, the male killed the female during mating. I heard several aquarists had better luck with 3, {as long as the 3rd. was not harrassed to bad} and seems to be working fine so far.

Now what to do with the male. My tank is to large to remove him. Whats your plans? My refugium, slow flow overflows, have lots of pods small critters and tons of baby shrimp in them. I am hoping many of the bangaii baby make it in there. My other concern is the reports I have read on the male not having time to recover from the long period of time with no food, from holding the young.

I have had success in the past, rearing 5 of 11 babies for about 3 months, then got impatient and thought "they are big enough now to go in the main tank" but they weren't, woke up next morning and all were gone. :sorry:

A couple of days after this pic, the male was not carrying anymore, so I assume he spit them out early (has done this a couple of times since the successful batch)

I have never had a problem with just 2 Bangii (I heard that 3 was more of a problem than 2, since the one male would harrass the other to death)

As for rearing them, the refugium should work out OK if the flow is very slow. I would watch the Male closely after the 3 week period, and look for "eyeballs" looking out at you from within his mouth. Once you see them, it won't be long, so, come down one night after lights have been out some time, and catch him (should be easier and less stressful, and transfer him to the fuge). Once the babies are born remove him and let the babies feast on the pods, etc.
