aquatic ecosystems - www.aquaticeco.com
- everything to do with aquaculture and tons of good stuff that i know you guys would find helpful. A diy's dream come true!! Only downside is that it is in florida
- hey reefingeek - what do you get from homegrown hydroponics?
Cuz their ballasts are in no way cheap! just curious? also if you are going to say them then i would like to add that
"The Brite-lite Group" is an even larger company and has a site at www.hydroponix.com and has way better prices than homegrown..but at the same time homegrown will match their prices in most cases.
www.loc-line.com had their ontario distributor contact me:
.W.G. (Teddy) Pope
Edward H. Pope Ltd.
1-888-TRY-POPE
this is what i think i will be using so that i can avoid having powerheads in my tank...that way i will not have any current in the actual show tank...i am thinking of having my return lines running down each front corner of the tank and then having small nozzles spaced along the pvc return line....the stuff is fully modular and is salt safe..also you can have very short extensions so that it is basically a nozzle joined the the pvc lines...this would offer more flexibility with flow patterns...also really cool are the fittings with the side flow nozzle...which are almost like a venturi injector ....tres cool!! anyhow..i havent told anyone that i was gong to do this yet so tell me what you think...c ya

There is a GREAT place for all your plexiglass needs, I can't remeber the name of it though.......I pass by it everyday on my way to work. Its on Derry Rd. just east of the International Centre in Etobicoke. They will cut you anything you want from 6" diameter tube to 1\16" sheets. I have made many wet/dry's just by giving these guys the measurements of all the pieces and buying their glue....and a couple hours later you have a DIY sump
I will post the name tomorrow.

Hello everyone,
I recently made a new light hood for MH and flourescent tubes. It is fan cooled and 6 ft x 22in x 8in. When it came to the reflectors I was unwilling to pay the price for spiderlight etc. reflectors. There is a company located in the Woodbridge area, ACL Inc. that manufactures polished aluminium reflectors. Check them out on their web site - it is very informative. In any case, they make relectors that are roughly parabolic in shape and direct almost all light directly down into the tank. Reflectors like aluminium foil and reflective duct tape might reflect light but tend to bounce the light around the hood - back and forth, not always downward. I got three reflectors that were 47 inches long and designed for a double flourescent fixture. I overlapped two of them and cut the third in half. Now my light canopy has it's entire length and width covered with a parabolic aluminium reflector - fits under both fluorescents and halides.
Electrical supply companies might be reluctant (they were with me) to order a small number of these items. However, ACL has a minimum $100 order and since each relector is less than $20, if a couple of people got together and ordered 5 or 6 it would be worth it.
I lose almost no light directed from the sides of the light canopy. Almost all light is reflected down into the tank. It made a huge difference in the available light in my tank compared to the pendants I was using before. Check them out.

This place has acrylic tubing and sheets.
I got some 4" OD tubing for a skimmer there.
Guess what? 4" PVC pipe is not 4" OD. It is 4-1/2" OD. So 4" PVC fittings need 4-1/2" OD acrylic tubing to fit. Duh!
No problem, these guys did an exchange with no hassle.

Mr Bove, I saw some Dolomite at Canadaian Tire of all places, in the spring time in the same area as the grass seed. I have no idea if it is suitable for our use or not but if you want to check further into this that one place to start.

AJ, I was wondering if you ever thought of doing a thread where a list of links to useful DIY projects could be kept? You know the basics, MaxiStream Mod, DIY Reactors, skimmers and then links to tank and stand calculators.
This may already exist but it is very early in the morning and wasn't able to locate one. I am just looking for a project to keep me busy on my upcoming days off.

There is the AP Web Links (http://www.aquariumpros.ca/modules.php?name=Links) section (left-side Main Menu) -
within there, is DIY links (http://www.aquariumpros.ca/modules.php?name=Links&file=viewcategory&cid=6).
Trying to get that section built-up a little better - as it would help to organize the different projects.

Jackpot fellow enthusiasts....
There is a drum recycling depot in Hamilton. They carry hundreds of used barrels and containers in a variety of shapes & sizes. Many were used to store food and pharmaceutical (USP) grade ingredients.
I picked up a clean, translucent white (plastic) 55 gal drum today which was previously used to store USP grade propylene glycol (a harmless ingredient in the same class as glycerin). The barrel is fitted with two threaded, plastic bungs on the top, so it is perfect for R/O storage (even has raised markings on the side to show the level every 5 gallons!)
Best thing however is the price - $10 incl. taxes!
Here is the contact information for anyone interested:

FYI: Just to update the info on "Recycling Service" in Hamilton
The phone book and website information is no longer correct (phone # still works). They are no longer on Lottridge St. They have moved to a location near the corner of Centennial Parkway (HWY 20) and Mudd St (on the border between Hamilton and Stoney Creek, on top of the escarpment)
I was there today, and picked up 2 x 30 gal HDPE barrels for $10 each. Good deal! There were plenty of other barrels to choose from, and for the most part, the guys working there knew what was previously stored in them.

Really helpful people. If your in the east end (Oshawa), it's a good option. They have cutoffs in house or they can order in what you need.
