Last night papa Bangaii spit out the first batch of new babies. There are 5 tiny but healthy looking new guys in the nursery tank now. Papa still has a mouthful of babies and will likely spit out more into the world tonight.
I'll keep everyone posted.

As of last night, papa Bangaii has finally spit all of the baby bangers into the real world.
I've got 20 tiny little Bangaii Cardinals!!!
Handing out cigars......
Pics to follow when Shadetree (Scott) and I can arrange it.
In the meantime papa has been moved out of the nursery tank into my refugium for a couple weeks so I can fatten him back up and give him a quiet resting place before putting him back into the main tank to be harassed by that pestering (horny) female.
Can you imagine not eating for 4 weeks to propigate the species? And women think a couple hours of labour is difficult!!!! (ducking in advance)

Good to hear Andrew!
How did you come by a mated pair? Trial and error, special order or is there some way to tell them apart when picking them out?

Completely luck, no skill involved. :D
Came home with two healthiest looking fish that seemed to get along with other fish in the LFS' tank (5 Bangaiis in the tank). It was 5 months later that I discovered I had a pair (male holding eggs one day). Up till that point all I could determine was that I DIDN'T have 2 males, as they weren't killing each other.
I could have had two females, but I guess I was lucky enough to have picked a male and a female.
From what I have read, there is no visible way to determine the sex of Bangaii cardinals. It's pretty much trial and error, so try to find an LFS that will trade if you don't get a pair, but keep in mind it could take months to find out, based on their size (until they reach sexual maturity). Mine were both about 1.5" long when purchased, and began breeding after reaching about 2" long. They are currenly about 2.5" long, pretty much their maximum.

Thanks, my LFS seems to get them in fairly regularly(where's that darn spellchecker?;)) I think in a couple of months I'm going to try to get a pair and set up a breeding tank(s).
