How do you guys clean/vacuum your sand beds? Before when I used a larger grain sand, I could vacuum it, bend the hose, and then the sand would fall back to the bottom. This time around, I chose sugar sand and I'm having a hell of a lot of problems using the same method. A lot of the sand tends to get sucked in with the dirty water since it's so light. Anyone got any secrets they would like to share?

You don't vacuum the sand bed. You should not need to.

I second that thought. I don't vacuum mine at all.

I sub-contract the job out to nassarius snails, fighting conchs and sand sifting/mopping cukes. I give them a good benefit plan but low wages. :)

Should never disturb a DSB in this way. It could cause potential problems.
If its a cc substrate and not a DSB then its probably OK, but even then if you have the proper clean up crew there is no need for it.
