bought a few hermits yesterday and two have died on me already. don't think there's anything wrong with the water since the snails which have been there for a week are all doing fine. did they die because i didn't acclimate them? i pretty much just threw them in once i got home. or was it a total luck of the draw type of thing?

Snails and crabs in general are very sensitive to temperature, salinity and pH changes. So it is important to acclimate them slowly. As a general rule you should never just throw anything in. Always float them in your sump or tank for 15-30 minutes to equilibrate temperature and over the next 30-60min slowly add your own water to the bag or container they are in. Also you should never dump any water from the LFS into your own aquarium.

Personally I have never botherd to acclimate snails and hermits... I swear I could fire them in with a slingshot and they would still survive. I havn't ever had a casualty asfar as hermits and snails...
BUT that is with the exception that my water was never more then 2 dagree's off from the water they were in! AND I AGREE WITH THE NOT USING WATER FROM THE BAG YOU GOT THEM IN! IF YOU ONLY KNEW HOW MUCH MEDS GO INTO THE WATER AT A PLACE THAT YOU GET FROM!

Guess I'll try to match the temps before I throw them in next time. And I didn't throw in the water from the LFS. At one point I did think about it, but played it safe instead.

best to drip them! ..
When you get them put them in a container with an air hose tie a knot in to it, to control the flow rate and drip it over about an hour an have it so that you drip 3 times the amount of water that you brought home.. into the container! .
Then just scoop them out and put them in.
