Clam Selection and Husbandry

Clams are a wonderful addition to a marine tank, but there has been a scarcity of information about them. This is about to change. MAST is proud to bring you a special presentation by a true clam expert, Tim Tessier. Tim keeps clams on a commercial scale, has experimented with methods for their care, and has a strong environmental bent. He has also been a professional photographer, so look for some great pictures. This is one meeting you must not miss.

Tim Tessier

Tim Tessier has had a passion for marine aquaria since 1977. In 1991, Tim was commercially culturing Caulerpa paspaloides and discovered how to prevent the caulerpa from ‘bleeding’ when pruned. In 1996, he traveled to Nha Trang, Vietnam as a professional photographer. There he heard of the plight of the fisherman in Nha Trang who had exhausted their fishery. He decided to use his hobby to provide a means of livelihood for these fisherman and others in the same situation. It was shortly after that that he started SeaCare Maricultured Products (SeaCare). Tim initially viewed SeaCare as a means to sell cultured corals and wild corals that were sustainably harvested by these fisherfolk. Tim now has a greenhouse where he propagates and experiments with corals under natural sunlight. The knowledge learned will be used to help train fisherfolk to propagate their own corals and clams. Tim has kept over 4000 clams in the past 5 years and has accumulated a huge amount of experience keeping these beautiful animals alive and thriving. Clams are his favourite and he relaxes by enjoying watching the clams in his care. He considers himself a ‘clam junkie’.
