very quick actually. I really lucked out with it. I traded some frags and two small pieces of it were added in the deal. Each piece was the size of your finger nail and they grew together and it keeps on growing. Today it is ~ 5-6" in diameter

The first was from another AP member in trade, the red echino was from Oakville Reef Gallery and the turquoise/pink from Reef Raft. I had the red and turquoise/pink for a year and they both started to decline while all other corals were doing fine – including the echino in the first pic. I tried moving them to other tanks to see if they could recover and also fragging them and lost both, which, needles to say, was a real disappointment. But, on a round of coral shopping, I found the exact same turquoise/pink echino and it is in my tank and doing well (to my surprise it was in RR tank for a couple of weeks).

I remember reading that often when these corals arrive, they are browned out, or just dull, and will colour up once happy in your tank and I've seen this as well . I think they are overlooked many times because of this, whereas other times they arrive with nice colour and are picked off pretty quick. There is a pink and green one at ORG that has been there for a while which amazes me…if I had room for it, it would be in my tank now. I’m guessing the other sponsors here on AP can/do get them in as well.

...give me a call next time you are in town and I'll see if I can get a frag for you, or, better yet, to get a nice size colony from a shipment - the GTA area sponsors that seem to have them frequently (IME there are very few frags of these available, I guess due to hesitation in fragging them, a little more difficult than cutting a branch off of an acro, for example).

I don't think it's the hesitation to frag them but actually how it looks after fragging. :) I got 2 X foot long diameter ones that look like UFO discs and I do not feel like fragging them into tiny pieces :)

I am wondering about this myself too :) mine don't seem to grow fast at all.

Here is pic from Sept 25/05. I can't remeber when the pic at the top of the thread was taken - it was recently added to the AP gallery. I'll get a current pic of it up over the weekend.

Hey RonPeter, what right in front of it in that pic? Almost looks like a red/blue hairy shroom?
