I do not have a permanent RO system on my tank. Before a water change I usually keep a few jugs around to replenish. My question is, for how long can I store the RO water?

I would call your local water depot kind of store and ask. Most of these places use regular tap water and then do RO etc to it. They should be able to let you know how long it can be stored for. I would definately run a power head if it sits for awhile.

I've got two rainbarrels full inside (one salt, one fresh) and they seem to keep for a while although the saltwater tank seems to have developed a slimey coating on the inside of the barrel. I'm thinking of getting a UV sterilizer to keep the water clean from any organisms.

Anyone got a UV sterilizer for sale?

I use a 50 litre plastic container to store my RO water, I use an outomatic top off system that draws from this tub. I used to keep the top open but did notice after a couple months the container had a film on it....I now cover the RO container and just keep refilling it every other week or so...no more film growth.
To answer your question, I have kept RO water for almost two months with only a small powerhead running. I don't recommend it but I have done it with success :)

The key to keeping RO water quality long term is bacterial management.
Keeping the water moving with a small powerhead and keeping a tight lid on it will go a long way in preserving your RO. Also a sterile container to start with is essential.
All in all, I wouldn't keep RO water for longer than about 3-4 weeks under the above conditions unless you go UV.

So, it sounds like a tank with pumped H2O and a UV system + a couple of power heads. Does anyone know where I could pick up a 60-80 gal (plastic) drum?

You can get a rainbarrel at Home Depot for $79 (maybe $69) which is a little more expensive than a regular plastic drum but it has the integrated spout at the bottom which is convenient and it's easy to get..

Or just pick up any Rubbermaid container.

I'm using a garbage can with wheels and a lid. I don't aerate or stir my water as I go through it about once every other day. But I do have a small powerhead inside to pump water out.
