We've had a female drop her clutch three times. On the third time around we observed the pair very closely. The pair had a favourite hitching post 3/4 of the way up the tank, during their courtship dance they were using this as their starting point and therefore were running out of room on their ascent up the water column in order to transfer the clutch. We removed the hitching post and placed three more at the bottom of the tank to encourage them to start from there. Voila' problem solved!........and a successful transfer the next cycle, male is pregnant.

So here's a tip if your seahorses are dropping the clutch before the transfer. Watch their starting point. If it's too high in the tank, they may be running out of height.
