I was doing one of my usual checks on the tank at night and came across
this little guy. Could someone tell me what he is? He looks and acts like
as starfish and is quite active. I had a heck of a time getting a couple of
snaps. Size is about 3/4" diameter and the tentacles I noticed can stretch
to over an inch long.

Micro Brittle/Serpent Starfish...won't get to more then about the 1" size you're seeing.

There will be tons more of them. :) Awesome little detritivores/algaevores.

Look in your live rock - likely dozens of little arms reaching out.

:cheers2:

Thanks, I have noticed them. It's great to see them get out.
Like going to a movie.

I spent nearly as much time in front of my tank with a red LED light after lights out, as I did with the MH's on. The diversity just amazes me...

:D

I know what you mean. When I first had the tank I had the lights off and then I started to wonder about the night life. I bought a great set of moon lights from a person on Ebay (red, green, blue) that you can adjust the settings for all perameters and it has been great seeing the night life.
I am looking at setting up an IFR cam to see this on a regular basis.
Thanks for your support. Reefkeeping is in my books not a hobby but
a love of a project. And I know from the people on this site that they are keeping "pets" and not just a tank with fish.
This grows on everyone, that has saltwater or freshwater fish and plants
and corals. ..... It becomes a very large part of our lives ....
And its a good thing.
I would like to say a Very Merry Christmas to all ....
and to all ............a happy tank.
Can you wish for more? dont"t say
All the best wishes for Cristmas.

Night life is great to watch, especially once the tank becomes more established!!! I'd be interested in how the IFR cam goes if you go that route. Just a word of caution that if you become addicted to sitting in front of the tank at your bedtime to watch the nightlife, make sure you have a good chair to sit in with proper neck support :couch:. There have been many a nights where I've fallen asleep :zzzzz: in front of the tank just to wake up hours later or even into the late morning with a stiff neck.
Remember again, night life watching in your reef tank can be hazardous to your health.
