Hi,
I just purchased one of these today from Reefquarium after reading many reviews (by the way, I did a lot of research on prices for this item, and by far Reefquarium was the best). Anyways, I know there are a few members here that own one as well and I would be very greatful if you can please share with me any helpful tips to get the best use out of them.
For example. Someone told me to empty all the bio balls and put live rock in its place. Stuff like that!
Thanks

I can only speak from my experience, I have 2 12G JBJ and 1 24G JBJ... and have made some mods to them
1. Remove all the filter media that came with it.
1st Chamber Live Rock Rubble and Filter Floss
2nd Chamber Cheato with small submersiable light.
3rd Chamber Rowaphos and Chemi-Pure
4th Chamber Pump and Charcoal
This is how I set up mine and had great sucess with it, I also removed the stock pump and replaced it with a Maxi-Jet 1200 and also cut a surface skimmer just above the intake outlet.
Anyways That is my 2 cents on the way it should be setup.

I've seen a second output piped in ( T off the main to the left and output put on) in a 12g. I've also seen the Pentium I cpu fans (really small) modded into the hood for circulation. You can also drill the back for a Ca reactor (but there is a high crack rate with the 12g and a few with the 24). The Viper was designed for the JBJ's as a clip on MH but you can mod the hood to hold a MH.
The best mods that should be done are the surface skimmer, fuge/sump, vent, and replace stock pump mods.

When I had mine, I added a surface skimmer, and I drilled a hole and installed a second powerhead (so I had one in the 1st and last chambers) and also replaced the stock powerhead with a MJ or Rio.
I also added a skimmer in one of the back chambers and upgraded the lights to a 70w MH.

I have recently taken down my 12G DX but had modded it slightly. I added a 3rd bulb on a seperate switch to have Actinic (Dawn/Dusk). I removed the stock pump and replaced it with a MJ900 and added a Hydor Flow to the output. As well I removed all the supplied media and set the chambers as follows.
1- ChemiPure and occasionaly filter floss (changed after 48 Hours)
2- 1/2 LR rubble 1/2 Cheato with external light (scrape away vinyl)
3- LR rubble, 50W EboJager heater temp probe ATO input and floatswitch
I tried the Fission skimmer, not worth the money. If I was to do another I would probably do it all the same. But I would add a second return from chamber 1 and plumb it off a AC 802 or similar and run 2 Hydor Flow rotators. If you didn't get one with the tank a surface skimmer is a must have.
