I bought some blue legged hermit crabs from big al last week, and mixed amongst them i found these two white legged hermit crabs. they have been hanging around my macro algae for the past few days already. what are they and what do they eat? are they reef safe? Thanks for helping :)

there legs are just all white or white and black, if white and black they are zebra hermit crabs, if all white im not sure.

I had one white/black legged crap in my tank it came with live rock as hitchiker. Until now he didnt kill any of my snails yet i just see him after dark. Comes out and eats and goes back into rocks again. But only difference is he changed his shell with one of the empty sheels i put in the tank. Other then this he seems ok.

most hermits are reef safe... frankly ive not hear of any that eat corals actively.
problem with some hermits is that they get big. attacks fish etc..
chances are u got a zebra or white-lined mixed in there. perfectly safe, no worries.

Over my years of reefing I've seen a blue leg empty out a healthy 1" clam, a red leg (not scarlet) pluck off green candy cane heads, a zebra munch on a acan, and many other incidents. The only hermit even remotely reef safe, and even then only at 1 per 15g, is the scarlet hermit. Even then you need to keep an eye on the little devils as they too can cause trouble.
There is no 100% reef safe hermit. They are opportunistic hunters.

ALL Crabs are either in Refugium (nice ones!!) or nasty one in Sump...IMHO
